A great guide on the official forums.

Evolve is a 1-5 player asymmetrical, co-op, competitive FPS-the Hunters, TPS-the Goliath video game using CryEngine3 and being developed by the creators of L4D. My impressions from research is that Turtle Rock will be making extensive use of light and dark, slow and fast, quiet and frantic (not to mention the tracking of footprints!!) to create an emotionally intense and unique experience every time you play the game (see 1:58 – in Why Evolve I Not Just Another First-Person Shooter). Does it show that I am ready to rock an Evolve wet-nipple T-Shirt and pre-order this puppy?

I’m more hyped for that Danzig cover than Evolve 😉

  2. February 11, 2014 5:13 am

This is not on the Evolve site, so we have another nice video treat.

Update: There are a bunch of Evolve Vids out there now (just since this morning). Don’t have time now to look through them and post links, but FYI (there’s a bunch!)

I’m really liking the darkness, lighting and shadows. “Feels” like what I would like.

Here’s the video on the Evolve youtube channel. I’m in love

Chris Ashton, design director for Evolve, has confirmed that a team must consist of a character from each class to be represented in order to battle the monster. The reason given was simply character balance. Each character class depends on the specific classes for survivability and damage output. Each team must consist of: a medic, support, trapper, and assaulter.

    • February 26, 2014 1:45 am

No problem. I trust Turtle Rock completely. Each class has enough “cool” that none are going to be nasty to play, though the Trapper does look like initially the most fun to play.

If this doesn’t just blow the narrative off of games, like L4D did, I will be shocked. It will almost certainly be an incredible experience every game. No contrived morality garbage, just “real” life or death situations when fighting for the protection of the colony against an alien monster. CRAZY fun!

Phil Robb of TRS just unveiled four more hunters! Check them out in this vid: http://www.gamespot.com/videos/evolve-four-new-hunters-revealed/2300-6418892/
Also, here’s a write-up about them here by Dean Takahashi: http://venturebeat.com/2014/05/22/2k-games-reveals-new-hunters-to-track-burn-and-kill-the-creature-in-evolve-hands-on-preview/
A bit of unfortunate news is that 2K has decided to release Evolve on October 21 instead of September as retailers were originally earmarking. Argh! Now Grymmie & rED can play NHL ’15 to their hearts’ content.

      Great finds, Kenny!

No problem about the one month delay. The only other Fall release on our radar is Sunset Overdrive (and that is just a curiosity at this point). It will give the devs just that much more to find the “Oh sh!t!, we missed this” bugs. Leave it in the oven, I say! 😉

“As for these twelve different maps that are available for launch, these areas are part of the Shear. According to Robb, twelve are planned for launch, but no exact number is in mind for how many to expect in the future.

…The game will eventually have a lot of characters to play with, and with the differences, there’s a lot of mixing and matching.”

BF games usually ship with 8 Rush maps. 12 maps is HUGE content! Each map is massive with flora and fauna, and with the different monsters and different characters/classes, it is going to take well over a hundred hours to get a feeling of confidence in all situations on all maps.

Meet Abe, the third trapper in Evolve: http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/11/04/evolve-introducing-abe-the-trapper-ign-first?read

Abe has some cool skills to track, but is severely lacking in the offense category. He has a Wyatt Earp look about him. Hence, the shotgun & revolver (tracer darts) set-up.

Mac-Man (Chris Ashton, TRS co-founder) said:
“One thing they missed is that Abe’s shotgun has an electronic choke. If you shoot fast, the pellets spread wide. But if you shoot slowly, the pellets don’t spread. They act like a slug. Abe can deal damage at close and far ranges. A shotgun slug to the head does a ton of damage. So you don’t have to get in close.

Abe usually takes a little longer to find the monster, but when he does, it is very hard for the monster to escape again. The tracker darts last 45 seconds, which is an eternity in game. By the time the dart fades, the mobile arena cooldown is seconds away from finishing.

The stasis grenades last a specific amount of time. I think it is 15 seconds right now. They generate a dampening field which slows the monster dramatically. Unlike harpoons, they cannot be destroyed. If the monster doesn’t want to be slowed, he must leave the area.

As Abe, we follow tracks and bird sign and I shoot all the wildlife I can with tracking darts. You can also dart corpses if your friends kill wildlife. If the monster comes through that are again, he will probably eat something (Monsters are so hungry!) Once he swallows a dart, it activates and will remain active in the monster for the 45 seconds.

Now it is go time. Get to the monster and dome him. As soon as the dome is up, pepper the battle arena with stasis grenades. Now that the monster moves slowly (though abilities still work) it is time to go to work with the shotgun. I try to keep my distance and use the slug shots unless the monster is preoccupied, then I get close and blast as quickly as I can.

Stasis grenades are sticky, so you can throw them up onto ledges and such to create “no fly zones” for the Kraken.

    Good times.”

Also, two other characters were mentioned: Caira, third medic, who has Healing Grenades, and the third support, Cabot, covers the map with layers of radioactive dust that keeps track of the monster’s movement.

Awesome news that TRS does not want to fracture the community with the current industry trend of charging for DLC maps. Therefore, making all Evolve DLC maps free. Major props for TRS & 2K Games for having the balls to do that despite pressure from MS & Sony not wanting to publishers/developers to release content for free.

Along with that great news comes the annuncement if a new game mode for Evolve. In the new game mode, Nest, the monster must defend scattered eggs from the hunters. All of the hunters have to work together to destroy all the eggs. This essentially switches the role of the Monster being the hunted and info the hunter. No other details for this new mode have been released yet.

BTW: January 15th will be the confirmed date for the exclusive XB1 beta.

Whereas I’m salivating over Sunny’s Jet Pack Booster. Do we get these hunters for free since we pre-ordered? Or just Behemoth??

    • March 19, 2015 4:45 pm

If you bought the deluxe digital pre-order for about 80 bucks, then you do not have to pay more for these.

I bought the regular digital pre-order edition and with that came the 3rd tier Hunters, Parnel et al. It also includes 4 monsters, so the Behemoth will be no additional cost. Also, you will get the new maps/modes for free whenever they become available.

Not the Hunters though. That is their new DLC model. Hopefully other companies will be using it, too. It looks as though they are about to make another blunder, however. They needed to give everyone some free maps, first. That way, people would feel better when they start knocking on doors asking for money.

2K marketing is out of touch, or should I say they are touched (definition 2).

The patch version 1.3 was released on PC today, and the same update will be hitting the XB1/PS4 Tuesday, March 31st. Here are the patch notes:

All Monsters – Minor maintenance and improvements
All monsters can see recent damage on their health bar to help make burst damage visible.
Kraken – Fixing some flight edge cases that were causing inconsistencies making him too powerful or too weak depending on the situation.

    Vortex
    Cooldown increased by one second.
    Reduced knockback magnitude.
Tranq Darts, Stasis Grenades and Harpoons pull Kraken down at a consistent rate regardless of whether he is in combat or out of combat. (they used to stack outside of combat)
Kraken’s flight speed is no longer slowed by Tranqs since they pull him to the ground where running speed is affected.
Fixed a bug that was causing Aftershock to not break harpoon traps or Arc Mines.
Wraith – Making her movement speed less bursty which makes her easier to keep track of. Making Supernova less lethal while still allowing it to be just as powerful. Making Warp Blast a damage dealer instead of a traversal mechanic.

    Warp speed reduced 25%
    Supernova duration decreased by 50%
    Decoy
Wraith becomes visible for half a second when shot while cloaked.
Increased cooldown time by 2 seconds.

Evolve has offered several community challenges that have circumvented the paid DLC weapon & monster skins. Last week was the Voodoo skin for the Goliath. This week is the Bucket Sentry Guns Challenge. Players that can earn 200 mil damage on monsters using Bucket’s sentry guns will earn a Predator weapon skin for Bucket. However, if the community can earn 350 mil, everyone that plays this weekend will unlock the Predator weapon skins for all of their support characters. Hit the link for more details: http://evolvegame.com/news/evolves-bucket-sentry-gun-challenge-weekend

  25. April 16, 2015 9:05 pm

Thanks for the heads-up, Kenny. I love playing Bucket, I just haven’t done so for a while because he is all buffed out and my other characters are not. I am always up for throwin’ down Bucket’s sentries in Defend. It would be cool if they could do something with that gametype, btw. Maybe even add a map or two. It is a really fun alt Horde mode.

BTW, much as I love playing Crow, I am NOT a natural tracker/trapper. So, while I can use the abilities effectively, I surprise myself by my lack of sense for the most important skill – actually tracking and following the monster (which has nothing to do with the character abilities).

On the other hand, doesn’t matter what class Kenai plays as, he always seems to be right on the monster – even when playing as the slow Assault!!

Let this be the official request for Kenai to practice up his Trapper class. He needs to be ready to take that class and lead the team on teh HUNT! I will take Assault or Support if the team doesn’t mind.

      Bucket Challenge

    • April 16, 2015 9:12 pm

      Outstanding!

    • April 17, 2015 8:34 am

Actually, the reason I think I am doing better finding the Monster is because I have been playing as Assault, this allows for me to travel solo (with less risk). So I have been allowing you all to “Push” him toward me. He is sniffing / avoiding you all, and I am “cutting him off at the pass. That’s really all that has changed in my playing. I’ve been going it alone. Yes, it’s risky but that is why we’ve been getting more domes. If I was to be the Trapper, I think I would be in trouble because if I domed him, you’d have to catch up. By then, I’d probably be dead.

p.s. Heading to the cottage this weekend. Have fun hunting boys!

Well, for those that assumed that TRS would simply just hand out the Predator Support skins for this past weekend’s community challenge; you’re wrong. The numbers tallied to 310+ mil damage by Bucket’s sentry guns, leaving the community short of a bit under 40 mil. We earned the Bucket skin, but not the set. Oh well, it is what it is. 😦

BTW: I know that you haven’t received the skins that you’ve earned from the past two community challenges, Suns. I believe that it’s because of the IP filtering since Evolve hasn’t been released in Japan yet even though the TRS Gold monster skins slipped through. I know that the skins don’t really mean much to you, but it sucks that you don’t have access to something that you’ve earned.

    • April 21, 2015 12:09 am

No problem, Blanky. As I mentioned, I am not interested in going hat in hand to ask for something I should get anyway. I also won’t be interested in trying to jump through any more hoops to meet their “get-people-to-put-the-disc-back-in-the-tray” challenges. So, it sets me free. I am now free to play it the way I want, when I want to. I may take a little break to finish GoW:J and sneak in a couple of rounds of Garden Warfare. lol

Evolve is a great game with a very innovative premise and a mostly-polished delivery. TRS took on a huge task with this game and the results are outstanding, actually. In some ways, the stars need to be in alignment, that is, there are some critical conditions that need to be met, for the game to shine as intended. But I don’t care either way. I love that they took the risks and created this game.

I very much look forward to whatever new game TRS may create in the future. With small and big problems, I ain’t writing them off.
