The OT: Destiny’s Child

May 18, 2017

“Nobody expected that Light could be taken away?!” Oh, noes!!!

I did not realize this until now. Nathan Fillion, of Firefly fame, is from Edmonton, Alberta. Being slightly older, I would have graduated university just before he started. I recognize the voices of both him and Gina Torres, also from Firefly, in the trailer below. And I can’t be sure, but I think I even hear Lance Reddick from The Wire. As it is the sequel of a widely embraced game, published by the loud, brash, and spendy Activision, Destiny 2 (official site) will almost certainly be the best seller of Autumn 2017. Xbox gamers get the delayed DLC version.

Several gamers that we love and respect, one of whom just recently had his nuts polished, swear by the multiplayer modes, including the 6 player co-op “Raids”. The art direction is sufficiently different from the original that I am being open-minded to the idea of playing it.

(Clever, aping Blade Runner in the thumbnail.)

22 (more) Minutes of Gameplay and Dev Interviews

NOTE: I edited one sentence because I believe Nathan et al were also in the original game, and I implied that they were not.

Will need lots of positive impressions to get any interest from me.

Couldn’t delete the first game off of my HDD fast enough. F’k Bungie & Activision!

    LOL!

  3. May 18, 2017 9:45 pm

Clarification, my LOL! above was at you two clowns and your lightning responses to Destiny 2.

Hey, I don’t mind not buying a game. And as you can see, also above, PlayerUnknown is kicking ass in the development time turnaround. After watching several hours of Zos play last weekend, I am convinced that I can play this game and have a heck of a lot of fun. Also because of the dev’s dedication, it should have some longevity (anticipating new game modes, etc.). Here’s hopin’.

    • May 18, 2017 10:39 pm

Vaulting was my only gripe with what I have played so far, and they are already on it! So many other devs wouldn’t even touch it lol

Also, we didn’t give you enough props for the thread title, pretty perfect lol

PS, called Comcast to complain about the most recent overage fee which is about 50% bill increase. The rep quite essentially told me to fuck off. He even said “what are you gonna do?” as there are no service providers beyond Comcast locally which offer more than single digit down/up speeds. Just as an FYI, we don’t have any 4K content and have exceeded the limit every month.

Google Fiber pulled completely out after Comcast strong armed them. Hopefully we get some of that “5G” wireless broadband soon. But Comcast just launched their mobile data plans for smart phones, so they will probably find a way to monopolize that as well (legal/lining the pockets of the politicians). Only in America does the worse service and the higher price end up your ONLY option.

    Good times.

Anyhoo, anyone going to be on tonight?

  6. May 19, 2017 6:37 pm

It is horrible that you don’t have choice for providers. In the games arena, it is because Sony and MS continue to bungle their way around, that we don’t have the same situation for console choices.

I can’t jump on until about 4pm today (midnight? PST). I can get on much earlier on Sunday (Sat evening PST). I am definitely down to be your eyes and ears if you be Beamin’ Battlegrounds, or your wingman in RL, or whatever everyone decides to play.

Better get your RL gaming in, Suns. Next Friday, you’ll be watching one of us Beam Friday the 13th! Muhahaha! 😈

      Ha ha ha! Awesome!

    • May 19, 2017 11:14 pm

I just watched some more F13th vids and people seem to be lovin’ it. I will buy sight unseen, but that just means I will be less likely to purchase DbD day one.

      Are there pre-order bonuses?

EDIT: I want to wait (hours? days?) until I know that the game is actually playable, that the serevers can handle the demand. I don’t want to buy it and then spend the weekend trying to connect to the server.

That’s exactly why I said watch us Beam F13. Don’t buy it blindly.

    The Celtics are setting records.

I cannot, in good conscience, malign someone undeservedly, so on the slight chance that I am wrong, I am saying this between us rather than as a stand alone post, or on Twitter, etc.

LeBron’s performance is reaching that of the stars: Lance Armstrong, Barry Bonds, Ben Johnson, Mark McGwire, Tyson Gay et al. It is possible that his muse isn’t HGH, but my doubts have now surpassed my confidence otherwise. Innocent until proven guilty, however, I will no longer going to offer any praise of his play.

If I were a betting man, I would not want to place my money on GSW.

More of a Devil’s Advocate here, mostly because I’m not sure where this is coming from, but… PEDs don’t really make sense in basketball. Look at the list you made: A cyclist, track athletes, and baseball players. Lance used endurance enhancers for a 2,000+ mile race. The sprinters can use explosive strength. Baseball sluggers as well, when batting. Baseball pitchers have also been tainted, as the duel at the plate is a very individual competition. Being explosively stronger does not automatically correspond with being a better shot, rebounder, or really any role in basketball.

    • May 20, 2017 8:10 am

I don’t have much knowledge about the specifics of the various flavors of steroid/growth hormones/performance enhancers etc..

However, I do know that in basketball you need explosive strength to make, or prevent, the transition baskets, high leaps that give you dunks or tricky lay-ups, you need endurance to play 42 minutes (LeBron’s minutes) of a 48 minute game, where, in contrast to skating, cycling or especially baseball, there is no coasting, or standing around respectively, thirdly, you need injury prevention to a degree second only to American football. No other sport demands more of all the joints, especially those from the waist down.

Anyone taking substances that would protect, heal, enhance, and or energize, would be a great advantage in the sport of basketball.

Where this is coming from (and I am always appreciative of your input and inquiries), is a hunch back when LeBron kept getting dehydrated during his championship winning runs playing for the Miami Heat – he had so much energy, he would jog to the stadium before the game! Now, four years later, he is stronger, faster, and with greater endurance, yet he has played more games than any other NBA player, adding fully two months to each season in the past 7 years. But don’t just take my doubts for it, listen to his colleagues. They are starting to mention his “fountain of youth” gameplay, the fact that he goes to Europe, Germany(?), for two week “holidays”, the fact that he has never been injured…never been injured.

      http://us.blastingnews.com/sports/2017/05/demar-derozan-talks-about-lebron-james-and-his-improvement-001681379.html

“He seems a lot faster and quicker this year from last year. With that extra hop, step, everything out there on the court. It’s incredible for somebody with that amount of mileage on him, to come back seeming faster and quicker,”

After reading that quote, look at this pic.

EDIT: This had me laughing out loud late at night.

And this whole thread is full of good ones.

The problem is that there isn’t just one drug that makes you better all-around, and the drugs that are out there are great at one specific thing. He would have to take a cocktail to cover everything, and it would be found by testing.

I believe that there are a few things at play here. 1) Advances in legal sport science. It’s not just practice and then go out and eat junk food. I’m sure LeBron’s chef is all about proper nutrition first. 2) LeBron is on point and competing 24/7. He is 100% focused on his legacy and he is chasing Jordan. Everything he does, in practice, in the off-season, in dealing with the media, on the court, or behind the scenes is focused on his goal of being the best. He’s been doing this for years, and he’s improved over time. It is rather exceptional, as are his results. 3) Specific to game 2: They announced the Season MVP finalists shortly before tipoff, and his name wasn’t on the list for the first time in a decade. His first half was a statement in response to that snub. He feasts on disrespect, it fuels his excellence.

    • May 20, 2017 11:31 pm

Herandar, I can’t argue with anything you put forth, except as far as I know there is NO testing in the NBA. That is why it wouldn’t show up. There is nothing on which it should. But while we are on the topic of his excellence, I would like to add to your list that he is very intelligent, one of the best minds in the game.

But, if he is “cheating”, I don’t want to celebrating his achievements or greatness anymore. There are a lot of ballers out there who could do amazing things if they didn’t get injured, or if they had extra stamina to take them through the 4th quarter, etc.. That is why I am writing this here and now, because I am acknowledging, but I no longer believe that he is doing it just on his own natural steam anymore.

The NBA does have drug testing, though. Four random tests during the season, and two off-season tests by an independent company since 2011 per the CBA.

      http://www.nba.com/2015/news/04/16/nba-and-nbpa-to-introduce-hgh-blood-testing/

Not saying it’s as comprehensive as the Olympic regimen, but it exists and it does return positive tests: http://pr.nba.com/tag/nbanbpa-anti-drug-program/

Thanks, Herandar. I didn’t know that they had even these token tests.

      I loved hearing the story!

My excitement for this game builds, and I can easily see myself enjoying this one “solo”, even.

Congrats, by the way. Beam me up some more on Saturday?

I am buzzing for this game like Kenny is buzzing for F13 right now (I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes to work this week in a hockey mask with red corn syrup dripping off his brow).

Seriously, I had a TON of fun watching this weekend, but it wasn’t like watching “pro” RL or Halo or something. I could imagine myself playing it and doing ok. I can play and, at the very least, camp and screw up someone else’s chicken dinner.

My overall stats will be highly embarrassing, but I don’t care. I am used to “rockin” a 0.41 KD ratio. LOL!

OT Did y’all open those crates today?

EDIT: I have to add this caveat. The effects of a high ping are going to be devastating in BG. My heart breaks for me and Cornie.

I actually got to watch the end of the third and most of the 4th live. Loved seeing the Celts pull up their pants a little, show a little fight and pride. In game two, the Cavs were making sweep gestures on the bright green floor, bumpin’ into refs and shit. It was disgraceful.

That’s what you get when you disrespect an opponent! After the Celtics got absolutely punked by Stephen A. Smith, they showed heart without IT. Boston will still go down in the conference finals, but they can hold their heads high. They’ll be very interesting next season with the #1 draft pick & if they can sign Gordon Hayward.

Lebron is still pissed that he didn’t make the MVP finalists playoffs list. “I know what I bring to the game.”- L. James Yeah, your ass brought eleven points at home! Bwahaha!!! MVP, my ass! πŸ˜‚

Red Dead 2 delayed until spring 2018 (fine by me). By the looks of the screens, this is going to be an insanely beautiful game, especially on new hardware:

NBA salary cap is increasing by $24 million next season. Teams that were at the cap last year are going to have to add $14 million in salary just to meet the allowed minimum next year. That is going to be a bonanza for a lot of people.

  13. May 22, 2017 6:45 pm

    Meanwhile:

Microsoft better have a massive line up of exclusive games or at very least announce version of the “currently PS4/PC exclusive” games. Otherwise, what is the point of the hardware? This is an area where Sony has an already gigantic advantage. While, the 1.84 TF to 1.31 TF disparity was the cherry on top for the Xbox’s list of launch problems, a 6TF machine machine won’t be enough to get people to “jump back” to Xbox. If someone already own’s a PS4, the drive to buy is much less compared to the start of a new console gen.

Hopefully they prove me wrong at E3, but there is an appearance of lack of initiative in this regard. Microsoft has spoken at length that they don’t like the “buying exclusive” business, but it is a necessary strategy at this point. Otherwise, developers will clearly choose the path of most profit (and install base).

That’s what I’ve been concerned about all along since they announced the Scorpio. Phil has made it clear that he’s against securing third party exclusives, but that’s what you have to do when you don’t have enough quality first party titles. Judging by the snail’s pace that Rare is at with Sea of Thieves, that IP won’t be available this year. Crackdown 3 isn’t a game that’s going to be a system seller & neither is State of Decay 2 after it broke all of its ambitious pie in the sky plans. No Gears & no Halo this year as well doesn’t help launch a new console. Marketing rights for Shadow of Mordor 2 is meh, regardless of how well the first game was critically received. If MS is expecting gamers to be wowed with Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Origins title, they’re seriously smoking something. Meanwhile, Sony’s first party offerings look great & they’re scooping up marketing rights & timed DLC exclusivity like crazy. I don’t know what MS’ strategy is. They can start with locking up Battlegrounds since Mike Ybarra is a huge fan of the game. Securing IO-Interactive & the Hitman IP wouldn’t hurt either. This E3 conference can either make or break the Scorpio before it even launches. 😩

P.S. CliffyBitches can suck it because Lawbreakers is yet another arena shooter & hasn’t garnered much hype. Bound to fail miserably. PS4 can have that shitty title.

    • May 23, 2017 2:19 am

      Yep.

I love it that people are still harassing him about the Gears 1 shotgun. He will be buried in a coffin with a Gnasher on his chest, and it will have one of those “BANG” flags sticking out of the barrel. Beside that, someone will have a picture of the Microsoft “B” controller – Cliffy B is for “B-button”, and “Bitch”, and over his crotch will be one of those shattered Gears DVDs that his fans kept sending him, his “Lag-acy”. Bwahahahahahaa!

Responding to all in one comment.

@herandar I look forward to seeing how the raised salary cap might change the landscape. My initial reaction is that it just helps the big market franchises, and not the smaller one so much.

@zosofan What is the 326GB stat on the tee, the specs of a SSD?!

Agreed 100% about the challenges facing MS right now, and what they need to do about it. For several generations, I bought the underdog hardware (the N64 in the days of the Playstation original, the GameCube in the days of the PS2 etc. etc.). It was a horrible experience watching all the great games getting made for the other systems. Conversely, it felt so great to be getting the red carpet and all the attention in the 360 days. I couldn’t careless about CliffyBitches Lawbreakers, seriously, BUT, I do care that timed exclusives including Destiny content and outright exclusives are happening for the Sony crowd. Sony has some talent in their first and second party developers and I do not want to be looking longingly at their library in the future

All that is left for buzz regarding the Scorpio is the announcement of the price and release date. If MS wants to even just compete at E3, they have to get up on stage and announce a ton of great games that are best or only played on Xbox hardware. If they spend more than 5 minutes talking about their backwards compatible content, TV goodies, and the Scorpio, they lose.

BEAM!!! SO FULL OF WIN! I cannot wait to hear about their future.

Edit: And Red Dead looks absolutely incredible, as even the first one STILL does. However, I am just not that kind of open world, single player gamer. I wish I liked that stuff more, because Rockstar sure knows how to make it.

  16. May 22, 2017 8:36 pm

Here, for example, is a title that would be cool to hear was coming only to PC and the Xbox.

      LMAO at the stunt!

Would it be too much to expect that someone who has the money and the power to secure a tight relationship with PlayerUnknown would use that and actually do something about it?! Make it happen, Mr. Ybarra.

    • May 23, 2017 5:21 pm

Yeah, if it doesn’t happen with this game. I doubt they are focusing on securing exclusivity at all. Then again, Phil S himself (along with lots of the company) play an insane amount of destiny and look how that relationship has continued.
