The Weekly OT #43

March 3, 2017
by

Like Peter Moore, who left EA for football in England, Phil Spencer is just instantly and continuously credible in my eyes (and ears). Zos linked to it earlier this week, but I didn’t get to it until last night. I very much enjoyed all of it. Second, ID@Xbox is has some incredible games in the pipe.

And for something completely different, I have been listening to a podcast called “Casefile“, true crime stories read by an Australian, and Episode 44 “Peter Falconio” is especially interesting.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

The only indie games in the ID@Xbox program worth following are Cuphead, Below, Tacoma, & Conan: Exiles. All of those game have been in development for a long time due to their small teams. In fact, Conan: Exiles just confirmed today that the game is delayed until late 2017.

Even though Phil realizes that the Xbox platform needs more first party exclusives. Halo, Gears , & Forza can’t be the only games that convince gamers to gravitate toward MS’ console. Yes, Sea of Thieves sounds promising, but relying on Crackdown 3 & State of Decay 2 aren’t going to cut it when Sony has offered a slew of PS4 exclusives. The last time I checked, not many gamers gave a crap about Phantom Dust or State of Decay 2. Also, the Crackdown franchise isn’t a system seller. Although I agree on the cancellation of Scalebound, Xbox definitely needs original IPs. Neither Sunset Overdrive or Quantum Break sold very well compared to Sony offerings of Horizon: Zero Dawn or The Last Guardian. If Phil has some games in development, he better start showing his hand because it doesn’t matter if you have powerful hardware in Project Scorpio if you simply don’t have the games that will take advantage of it.

Phil makes a lot of sense when he expressed that MS is weary about buying studios when the talent can simply make an exodus (i.e. Bungie & the Stamper brothers of Rare). Heck, Phil even shuttered Lionhead. That’s a lot of wasted time and money when you think about it. He didn’t have anything to comment on Remedy because they take forever in developing a game. That’s actually a smart move not to acquire them. Remedy has pie in the sky ideas that are cutting edge at the time, but the excruciating development length & the game seems very ordinary by the time it’s finished. It’s not like studios like Naughty Dog grow on trees. Sony invested heavily in first party studios even through the hard times when MS bailed on their sports division and studios that created Mech Assault, Crimson Skies, etc. Now they’re paying that price and left scrambling trying to figure it out. MS got lucky on the 360 despite all of the problems that should have decimated that console. Most of that luck was Sony’s hubris on a ridiculously unfriendly Cell chip to program for.

Delayed until 2017!!? Oh, the horrors of the super-near future!!!

Peter Moore moves to CEO of Liverpool FC! That’s an interesting move and no doubt one driven by passion

Yeah, Phil is a great head of Xbox. Even when decisions are made that I don’t agree with, the transparency makes up for it. You can’t make everyone happy all the time, but the way that you communicate is so crucial to consumer/buyer perspective.

Subscription service is going to be interesting. The model is very similar to Netflix and will likely grow on a similar trajectory (if it catches on). Microsoft needs to push their 1st party on there (you can sense Phil is hinting at that). If you put your first party titles on the service at launch, you will get a lot of bodies subscribing. The service could also help build player bases for less popular titles that get overshadowed when first released etc.

Q3 2017 for Conan Exiles, as opposed to Spring 2017 as initially announced.

Two big announcements regarding the game. Funcom has opened it up to the modding community. Wildcard (Ark:SE) is now paying $4000 a month to modding teams in the community to create content. If Funcom with CE was going to compete, this is the only way they would be able to do so.

Second, concluding GDC, they announced their plans for development for the next year. Quite impressive.

Not only did the Cavs lose Bogut in his fifty-eight seconds as a Cav, they lost to the lowly Miami Heat! Owww, feel the burn, Lebron! Bwahaha!!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

The biggest disappointment of 2017. The “endowment” slider option in character creator is not included in Conan’s xbox version. The swinging peter of fun will also be entirely censored. Assuming the same for female anatomy as well, but like anyone is interested in that.

Some poor interns spent months perfecting the physics and all for nothing on the Xbone. Imagine what would have been possible with the Scorpio, real time global illumination and shadows!

    • March 7, 2017 1:26 am

You guys have me bustin’ up here!!! Kenny laughing at LeBron and Zos mourning the censoring of Johnson. By the way, Mark has the game on PC and I saw his dick. Quite impressive, though the balls are subject to the wind in a way that isn’t yet fully realistic.

    • March 7, 2017 1:50 am

Back. I have to add this.

I find that kind of censorship so ridiculous. Do what Gears did, allow a toggle for crying out loud.

Don’t just blanket censor the game!

What, you allow the slaying, and SLAVING of people, but you won’t show a man’s cock?!

      GTFOHWTBS!

So far, this is the biggest hit against buying a Scorpio yet.

Haha totally agreed. The acceptance (a enjoyment) of ultra violence and fear of nudity is something that extends socially here in the states as well.

The thing is, if you want to embrace xbox play anywhere and UWP, you can’t pick and choose. I don’t think Conan is either of these things, but the assumption is that this was Microsoft’s call and it will dissuade developers from using those platforms out of principle.

It’s no better than offering a video platform on the console and including censoring that doesn’t exist in the actual film.

Make your rating system and parent controls easy and obvious. If you have parents who are out of touch and not watching their kids, the swinging Conan dick’s should be the least of your worries now that most kids are walking around with computers in their pockets.

That is a good one, rED.

And I give you SoW, for serious bad-assery.

Looks epic! This WILL be demoed on Scorpio at E3 (i’ll be shocked if not)

Just imagine if he played with this kind of heart during the Playoffs (the results of the CIRCUS shots are neither here nor there).

Doesn’t matter because they still lost to the Celtics.

    • March 9, 2017 3:35 am

Agreed 100%. I just came back now to delete the comment because at the time I posted, I still didn’t know the final score and it was close.

Looks like the Warriors did next to nothing in the 4th.

    THE PLOT THICKENS.

Microsoft says Conan’s penile feature set be available on xbone. They are leaving it up to ESRP.
