The Weekly OT #22

October 23, 2016

Battlefield 1 was released this weekend and I haven’t had time to play through the campaign yet, but the MP seems to be an outstanding cross between the best of BF3 and BF:BC2:Vietnam.  The settings in which the battles take place are gorgeous to the point of distraction, and the tools of battle appropriate to the era, challenging to use, and “fair”.  The emphasis really is on the infantry, even though the vehicles can be incredibly powerful, so it should appeal to all the nostalgic CoD2 gamers in our crew.  There are still niggling problems like the loading times and sluggish UI, but I think this is the best BF launch since Bad Company 2.   Anyway, with Rocket League having become a vacation for some, Gears 4 shining even in multiplayer (you have to check out Blankman’s “Epic comeback“), and now BF1 accommodating ALL of us at the SAME TIME, well, it is just a great time to be a gamer.

I highly recommend the above vid to give you some advanced info on what weapons to look out for (check out that Sawed-Off shooting from the 2nd floor across the street – lmao!).

rED was talking about the aim settings. I think this should help a lot.

Like I said in party chat, I blew my collective wad on that comeback. It’s all downhill from here. Bwahaha! 😂

BF1 really looks gorgeous. I can’t imagine what it’ll look like in 4K on the Scorpio. 😮 I’m looking forward to us rolling like a pack of wolves like we did in BF:BC2. Too bad we can only account for two squads. Sometimes, that’s enough to turn the tide of the battle even if we have dumb ass teammates from the public.

  3. October 23, 2016 8:09 pm

One squad is often enough, even with these large maps and teams. Playing with Kenai and his Navy friends’ crew on Friday (my Sat) was all it took. But they already have good knowledge of the maps (most important), have a good kit, and have all the settings adjusted. All I did was keep them alive, and grab flags.

When we played after that on Friday night, we were all noob in the truest sense. rED was saying even Saturday that he still needs to get his HUD and options settings right. I am hoping the video above will help with that.

Though I think BF1 is the easier of the two, both Gears 4 and BF1 are within our grasp for victorious fun. But they will take some time and dedication. I had a lot of fun in both games, but I am still caught doing the wrong things.

The bad news is that a few of us (myself at the top of the list) don’t have the time/resources to put in huge hours in a short time getting ourselves adjusted. The good news is that there is nothing on the horizon to take our (or at least my) attention off these games until well after Christmas. I have already promised that I won’t be buying any more $80 games until the new year. $160 in one month! Two great games, though!

Written by the same guy who wrote Crystal Skull. Cannot imagine a worse scenario. Straight to video, and never to be queued.

My exact same thought! They are labeling it as a positive, but i guess it is possible GL was lord dictator of the “film which should not be named”.

      Where the shadows lie.

Confession: I had a really good time playing GOW4 MP last night. Stuff seemed to work, and while I am not fond of a lot of the mechanics (meat shields, nade wall tags) the execution seems much better and relatively balanced. Still work to be done, but I was shocked at how much fun I had (even with TDM).

I thought i posted this already, so sorry if there is a duplicate somewhere LOL!

I envy your skills, Zos. To come out of the cold & play like you did leaves me speechless. I mean damn. You haven’t even acclimated yourself to the speed of gameplay (60 fps) & changes that TC has implemented in Gears 4 MP, and you start wrecking. I’m so jelly. Thanks go out to you, RoBBins, rED, & Zender for carrying my ass. I’ve got to play more as support by providing Lancer fire instead of having my shottie out.

    • October 25, 2016 10:07 pm

Video or it didn’t happen. 😉

I know that it is possible to get a consistently successful, “fair” (as can be with different pings) experience from Gears 4. There is a learning curve, adjusting to the hit box of the new gnasher, and probably more difficult for me, forgetting old gnasher habits from UE which appear from hiding at the most inopportune times. When Gears is on, it is nothing short of one the wildest, best experiences in gaming.

I have no less than three games that I would like to be playing in every spare moment, two of which require considerable time to master, and BF1 which will require time to acquire game knowledge more than skillz.

Re: TRS and Evolve. Too bad. I was hoping the new model would be brought over, but servers aren’t free no matter what the PC elitists will tell you. Someone, somewhere has to pay for them. I am glad that TRS made Evolve, and I will still be very interested to read about their new project. L4D and Evolve are two of the most original games on the market. Spectacular marketing mistakes aside, they have my respect for trying something new.

Every time we play on Impact, i’ll think about how we managed to get only 1 kill on the enemy team after crushing them the first round. Spawn trapping FTL!

Well, today was the final nail in the coffin for Evolve. THQ is no longer funding development for the game. Turtle Rock Studios is moving onto other undisclosed projects. MacMan made the sad announcement via their forums:

This also means that the free-to-play version of Evolve (Stage 2) that’s currently on PC will NOT be coming to the consoles. Too damn bad for a game that had a lot of potential. It was fun and suspenseful, but it wasn’t enough variation of content to sustain longevity.

MS got burned on their deal to market it with only two lousy ass maps that showed up with a thirty-day exclusive window. For that debacle; let the game die. 2K plans to eventually shut the servers down since there will no longer be any maintenance for the game. 😢

THQ has been funding the game all this time? 😉

Microsoft announces their own VR headset (with various partners). $299 and “The new headsets will be first headsets to have 6 degrees of freedom sensors, leaving you no need for a separate room or set up.” AKA you don’t need a camera (kinect) in order to accurately depict movement within space. Expecting this to be a big part of e3 17′. As a comparison, PSVR is $399.

Also, on top of the existing “refreshed hardware”, check out Microsoft’s new all-in-one:

Very weird/cool. I am starting to think the Scorpio will be aluminum bodied, but it isn’t neccessary because it isn’t likely mobile or crazy thin.

    @Zos, gamers win!

As for the “Classic Mode” video, they guy provides an excellent summary of the features of BF1 (several of which didn’t know about). But “classic mode” is not a good idea for one reason only, it further splits the community. Ultimately, it just sounds like he needs friends (haven’t quite finished the whole video yet).

  9. October 26, 2016 6:36 pm

Well, at least they don’t have the pressure of a starting win-streak. LOL! They are definitely feeling the shallow waters of their bench, and they are lookin’ nervous. Pachulia and Ring Hunter West leading with 4 turnovers, Curry runner-up with 3. You know, there are certain fundamentals that, no matter how boring, need to be respected. Giving the ball to the other team, is one of them. Of course, mistakes can be covered up with a cart full of threes, but when you are shooting under 35%, and shooting a lot of them, people can see your privates plain as if you had no fig leaves at all.

Among others, one of the things that Durant trade did is light the league on fire. Everyone wants to burn up the Warriors – note the in-your-face final dunk by Jonathon Simmons. Kawhi is the cream of the all-stars, Tony was moving like he was 5 years younger, their bench was making LOTS of threes, and the Spurs played a beautiful, exciting-to-watch game. Respect.

Elsewhere, Lebron started his season with a triple-double all over Anthony and Derrick. Damian also made a statement with 39 points in his first game of the season.

    Gonna be a fun year!

Zos, rED, & me were texting each other during the MS announcement of the $299 VR headsets & Beam (MS’ counter to Twitch). Asus would be my preference because the other manufacturers have issues with quality control on their PC hardware. Also, these headsets have been confirmed to be utilizing HoloLens tech. Exciting times!

In regards to the Golden State, Draymond “Donkey” should not have played center even though he has from time to time. Last night, Aldridge lit his ass up. Simmons was an absolute steal from the D-League. That dude was down on his luck & had to pay the $150 fee for a D-League tryout. Now whose laughing? Since the Spurs made every GM take notice of foreign players when they scooped up Ginobli & Parker, they were ahead of the curve. Now they’re doing the same with signing prospects from the D-League.

The casual Globetrotter passes need to be taken to the back of the barn & shot. Stop the bullshit showboating Curry. Then again, keep making those passes. My Clippers will benefit from them.

    • October 26, 2016 10:10 pm

Kenny, thanks for the D-league info. Agreed 100% about the Globetrotter passes. At one point, I am hoping for them to grow up. Play like it means something. Similarly, I am hoping that the Clippers show some off court maturity this year, and rein it in for the court – they have so much talent.

Re: Titanfall 2. Boy, I sure wasn’t feelin’ the cool in the beta, but I won’t argue too much about pickin’ it up a little further down the road for 10 bucks or something. Giant Bomb gave it 100, but Jeff loves CoD. Yeah, I’m just not feelin’ it.

  10. October 26, 2016 9:46 pm

    What a year for games!

  11. October 27, 2016 8:32 pm

    Interesting to note.
    1. His M1916 (with scope minimized at 2.5x instead of 4.0x), and
    2. He uses medic pouches which apparently “track” getting them to the player who needs them. The pouches can be thrown to those who need them, and the health boost is almost instantaneous, they cannot be suppressed or shot/blown up, nor do they require a warming up after suppression. BAGS! Play with BAGS!

The other point he makes is don’t have your medics leading the charge! (I remember saying just that this past weekend).

After getting my butt kicked in RL the past couple of nights, I am ready for some ego-soothing BF1.

P.S. I had a lot of fun playing Gears4 Co-op in the VS gametypes last night. I’m going to have to do more of that until I get consistent with the Shottie and better with the lancer/enforcer. With these Co-op options, and varied gametypes, there is lots of fun in the package.

  12. October 28, 2016 5:39 pm

And, the first two new maps for Gears 4 Season Pass owners are….Drydock and Checkout, remakes from Gears 3, both of which I didn’t like. They ain’t gonna tempt me to buy with offerings like that!

One hopes that there will be at least 12 of the 24 maps promised that aren’t remakes, but at this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if they included yet another version of Gridlock at some point, oh, and Blood Drive, because everyone loves that map! LOL!

  13. October 28, 2016 5:53 pm

The Trailblazers are no pushover team, Lillard is amazing, but Clippers stood tall. Their play last night reminds me of why I fell in love with them. Incredible game!

EDIT: Looking at the stats, Turnovers probably cost the Trailblazers the game. Its like a disease. Makes me think of the scene in Friday Night Lights when the father tapes the football to his son’s hands for fumbling.

EDIT 2: And it is a working Saturday. Won’t be on until late.

I have explosive mud butt. I am gonna nap then on. I am thinking RL during the cubs game, then switching to GOW/BF. I want to get both in at some point this weekend.

      Back to more pepto

    • October 28, 2016 6:31 pm

      Oh explosive mud butt! SNAP!

  14. October 29, 2016 5:53 pm

I’m telling you, this Durant trade was a good thing for the league. It offers a super villain, and motivates everyone in the league to play their hearts out.

Especially, since the Warriors were absolutely blown out by the Spurs on the first game, right from the start, everyone knows they can be beaten, and beaten like a dead horse.

Westbrook, Chris Paul, amazing, amazing PGs. Even just having done what he has done, he wouldn’t have it any other way now. The Thunder is HIS team. Triple Doubles are gonna flow like water (barring injury).

EDIT: Anthony Davis isn’t resting on his laurels, either.

OT: If you don’t already own Halo 5 and are remotely interested $14.98 digital code. I have bought several games from this site in the past, it’s legit. They usually have one of the better year of live deals all year round as well (currently 39.99 for 12 months).

They also have sick deals on PC, for example:

    New COD pre-order on PC = 35.89
    BF1 PC = 48.99

This post brought to you by CDKeys, THE BEST place to get your digital games. 😉
