Overwatch Beta: Guides and Impressions

May 3, 2016

I am creating this thread so that we can share our Impressions and Tips in one place. Cornie pre-ordered so we got in 2 days early. From the 5th to the 9th, everyone can try it for themselves. For those who don’t know, the Xbox One game is locked at 60 fps and it is pretty but not blindingly bright. There are LOOT BOXES with every level up which include character customizations reminiscent of those offered in PvZ:GW like emotes (gestures), sound bytes, and even Sprays (decals that you can paste onto walls during a game – a PC feature that has been around for a long time). Cornie and I have played every match together and we are now both mid-level 8, and only 200 xp apart, which is reflective of Blizzard’s teamplay reward and XP system – amazingly, we get different points for very different gameplay, but we end up the same because we are both working for the win. The ending of each match is unique in its lack of traditional statics, instead offering an opportunity for a vote on the top 4 contributers to the game (i.e., most damage done, most time on the objective, most “eliminations”, etc.). I am going to see if I can add some videos to my Activity feed for those who want to see the endgame Play of the Game and VoteEDIT: I embedded some of the videos above and below.  (The YouTube feature has become really fast and easy to use! WOOT!)

And here are some tips for playing the various characters: Part 1, Part 2, and specifically someone wrote up Junkrat, one of my current characters of choice.

The game is super fun and different. I can’t wait to dig more into the characters and each of their strengths/weaknesses.

As a testament to how good this game is, even Red is super excited about it and had fun playing it. And that dude is one of the hardest to please divas I can think of.

I have heard nothing but glowing impressions since it has been in beta on PC. The game has the “blizzard level of polish” and encourages lots of cool interactions each time you play it.

      Ain’t gonna find nothing.

  2. May 4, 2016 7:35 am

I think the biggest surprise for me is the polish. There are no crashes at all. None.

As for gameplay, it is ALL about map/character knowledge, situational awareness and mental flexibility. That is the game. Tonight, Cornie and I had to take a territory with 4, that’s FOUR sentries in a room. We were almost out of time and then Cornie suddenly thought, let’s use Junkrat. Check out the vid below for the results! SO GOOD! (P.S. That is his daddy protecting him with the shield.)

And as a bonus, I had another great moment with Reinhardt (rED and Zos were around for that one).

One of the cool things is that when you get one of those awesome moments, you call it, “That will be Play of the Game”, and then you wait to see if you get the honors. hahaha

Respawn (titantfall) is making a third person Star Wars game! The creative director is the CD from God Of War 3 (great game). This could be VERY interesting depending on what they do with it.

Also, this Friday is the big reveal of the next Battlefield game. Some of the dev team + engineers were mocking the latest COD trailer and indicated that jaws should be on the floor with what they show.

Frankly, at least COD shows their games at visuals comparable to what you play with console. If BF is demoed at max settings on PC and they can’t get console close then who cares!

I’m sure Blank will be first in line for a new BF :p

Don’t get me started with DICE/EA’s bullshit. All of their chest thumping is nothing but hollow grand standing. It’s like going nowhere at the speed of light. Just ridiculous.

I’m glad that you guys are tearing it up on the Overwatch beta. rED & I were waiting for people to jump on, and it was nothing but crickets for a long time. I had a homeowners’ meeting, so I jumped onto The Division for 45 min. I didn’t jump back into XB1 because I hit the hay early. I’d like to roll with you guys and try out Overwatch tonight. Is your three-day holiday over, Suns?

    • May 4, 2016 4:54 pm

Sorry I missed you yesterday. I went out very early for breakfast/brunch with a friend. Got back by 8pm PST but you were already sawin’ logs I think. All the better for tonight!

Cornie and I went to bed early last night so we could get up and join rED at 7am. It is 5:46am and I am already up. I’mma go out for a walk and then jump on no later than 3pm PDT. Be there or forever hold your honor cheap.

Kenny, allow me to suggest Reinhardt (shield/charger guy), Lucio (pump up the volume health/damage booster rollerblader), or Junkrat (grenade launcher – tire popper).

We should play against AI first. Give you the feel for it, and allow you to get comfortable with a class.

Suns, where will you be on E3 keynote day? I am hoping we can get a group in party chat during the conference for maximum LOLZ. I think so far it is just Blank and I. Red won’t take time off work, because he is saving it for BoyzTown/Manhole time.

Also, just a theory here. COD announced, BF announcement, new Star Wars game announcement… seems like people are jumping the gun on their reveals BEFORE E3 this year. Also, nintendo is pulling out their console coverage entirely. This seems very strange, and I think there must be some big news coming during the conference that they don’t want to overshadow their announcements.

  5. May 5, 2016 8:02 am

E3 Keynote. Middle of the night – Tuesday only 1 class. Should be no problem. Be there or be square.

And Cornie discovered the Anti-Roadhog just for you! It is Genji. Once you learn how to use his 180+ degree deflect ability, you can deflect Fatty’s hook, or wait till he reels you in and then deflect his shottie all back at him. You can aim the deflection! 4.5 minutes of goodness.

Damn that guy looks like a lot of fun to play! Gonna have to DL the beta once I get out of class!

Had fun with Torbjorn. Turret has much better aim than I do. Even ended up with the play of the game where all you see is me hammering the turret for ten seconds. 😀 Also just learned that in Swedish, o with umlauts does not mean ‘oe’. Learning everyday.

    • May 5, 2016 4:54 pm

The PotG that is even funnier is when you aren’t hammering, but respawning. Your turret keeps on Eliminating. And yes, they have made the “Engie” fun. Building sentries is much faster and with no need for metal. But, you do need to run around if you want to get metal to build shields. Then, when you build a shield, you just throw it out there and your team grabs it when they need it. It is also persistent. For every character and every ability, they took out all the bad/work decisions, and made everything fun.

As Reinhardt, I get to play the L4D2 Charger every 10 seconds (90 secs in L4D2?), bowling down the entire enemy team if I have the skills and timing. They gave every character FUN buttons. Not WIN, but FUN buttons.

The guide to heroes I linked in OP is good. If you have questions regarding a specific hero, check there. There are also a lot of great tutorial videos out there. Here are two on Mercy.

    Here is one on Genji.

Played an hour or so of Genji yesterday, and damn is he hard to use! If you’re not deadly accurate, you’re dead. It’s incredibly fun to pull out the sword and slash fools down though!

  8. May 6, 2016 2:23 pm

Battlefield 1. Looking forward to the reveal in a few hours! Zeppelins? I am interested to see what they do with this. The “in engine” snippets so far look unreal, more interested to see how it “actually looks”.

With the rumors or xbox 2 and ps4.5 at E3. I wonder what we will see of the game at E3 (could be THE showcase game for the improved hardware). My prediction is that the core visuals will be similar, but gen 2 consoles will both be 1080p and 60FPS (vs sub 30).

  9. May 6, 2016 4:20 pm

Kind of difficult to NOT be excited by that.

  10. May 6, 2016 5:02 pm

Very pretty! Like you say, it will be interesting to see how much comes over to the XB1. I have an open mind, but I have concerns. In BF4, I am just fodder to make everyone else feel like a badass. There must be some battlefeels if I am going to buy. Now that Gears 4 is off the list, however, I have more opportunity to look.

In the meantime,Rocket League and Overwatch (until I become impotent in that game) are all the game I have time for.

One thing I can’t believe is that Microsoft is unveiling a new $2000 value, multi-teraflop machine at E3 (at least not at a price I can afford). A slim, or slightly buffed machine? Yes, a Super Xbox, nah. We are going to be watching E3 and laughing as tears roll down our faces, for the dashed expectations.

    • May 6, 2016 5:06 pm

I don’t expect a major (4-5x) performance upgrade model. The costs would just be too high. That being said, Phil Spencer has openly said he isn’t interested in “smaller hardware upgrades” so who knows.

    • May 6, 2016 6:00 pm

Hey, I would love a Steam/Vive compatible, Word processing Xbox that processed 10 Teraflops/sec for $400, but I don’t see that happening. I would love something cool right about now.

P.S. The mustard gas in that video looked cool.

DICE went to the same numbering school that Microsoft graduated from. BF1 comes after BF4???

    • May 6, 2016 6:08 pm

LOL! I am assuming, in this case, that it is supposed to refer to WWI, but yes,

Having said that, history has shown that it absolutely doesn’t matter what you call your product…if it becomes successful. If it doesn’t, then it is the stupidest name anyone could have thought up.

    • May 6, 2016 6:10 pm

I think because the game is grounded in World War 1, it at least makes some sense (at least compared to XB1). I think they are playing on the idea of the WW1 being the original “Battlefield” historically. Global conflicts, air, naval and ground warfare etc.

    • May 6, 2016 6:20 pm

      Same, same! LOL!

Just rewatched the video. I have thought for a while, and this confirms, that DICE has the probably the best animators for human movement and some of the best sound people in the business. The opening melee is terrifying in its expressiveness, and regardless of resolution, that will be the same. The soundbytes/incidental speech in previous BF titles were outstanding, and even after 300+ hours of gaming, had me laughing out loud.

    • May 6, 2016 6:37 pm

      It looks really fun!

    not OT

This is a brilliant use of Reinhard – taking the nuke out of the base – and the comments on reddit are hilarious!

OT I would love it if MS would support GameDVR direct to Gyfcat like they do to YouTube.

I put up a post for Gyfcat, but the gifs themselves are understandably too big for smooth surfing. I deleted it. Here is a link to a bunch of funny/outstanding Overwatch gifs.

I wish my GameDVR supported direct uploads to YouTube. It’s never been an option for me.

Herandar, you have to log into your YouTube account, and then you have to link them. This ability should be available to all One users.
