Overwatch Free Open Beta – Choosing A Character

April 28, 2016
by

By Blizzard’s own mouth, for better or worse, Overwatch takes much inspiration from Team Fortress 2 and almost every shooter dating back to Quake.  There will be a free, open beta to all Xbox Live Gold subscribers running from May 5th to May 9th.  For those who have interest in downloading and trying it, it will be helpful to have some idea which of the 21 characters, you should choose.  Embedded is a playlist with a brief video overview of each character.  Rather than watching all 21 videos in sequence, I suggest you open the Playlist in a new tab and scroll to the character that appeals to you.  Though I know almost nothing about any of them, I will be trying Symmetra (think Evolve’s Cabot Damage Amplifier that actually does damage on its own, with The Incredibles’ Violet Parr shield ability, AND sentries! LOL!), and Torbjörn (think TF2 Engie).  Check this place for the class-ification of, and links to, each of the characters.  Mercy is the main medic, though Symmetra is also in that group.  For rED and Zos, I suggest at least trying Tracer, who somehow can actually turn back time.  I still cannot get my head around that game mechanic.  For those who like beefier characters, I suggest Roadhog or Junkrat.

And if none of that turns you on, remember, Rocket League is only 20 bucks, and owned by most of us already!  Cornie and I are each working on uppin’ our respective games.

Well done vid. Thanks for the embedded vid, Suns. Interesting watch, but these old fingers just can’t keep up with the youngsters’ quick twitch reflexes any longer. 😦

Kenny, thanks for watching. The only reason I even consider that I might be getting into this game is because there are many characters that don’t require anything more than some basic knowledge of maps and tactics, and the desire to be a team player.

The character Mercy, for example, is basically Cabot from Evolve, complete with the damage boosting ray, but also with a Healing ray, both of which bend to follow the other player. Even better, she has an “ultimate” which enables her to resurrect everyone within range.

I know that The Division is holding your attention now and for the foreseeable future. If you have time to try out the beta, I think you will find several characters that you can play. If you don’t want to, on the other hand, that is a different matter that I don’t/won’t hold against you. 🙂
