The Division: First Weekend

March 10, 2016

The Division Gateway Drug

Opening a new thread for the weekend (stickied). Everyone who is playing it is enjoying it.  I won’t be able to jump on until evening both Sat and Sun, however, I look forward to playing in a group, or even solo when I do.  Apparently, TD is Ubisoft’s top selling game.   This is extremely encouraging because from the beginning, it was obvious that Ubisoft wanted this to be its “Destiny” and with that ambition comes a vested interest to polish and support the game and please the fans. There will be no need to grind endlessly while getting dumped to the dashboard every 10 minutes for lame loot. So far, so good. ❤ Smoke 'em if ya got 'em.

Jet, me, Scwishy Skwashy took on the Dark Zone tonight. We then made a new friend in the DZ, and we were Rollin. What a Blast! High level AI, lots of them, and only one encounter with a high level attacking PvP squad the whole night. The rest of the time, everyone was helping each other fight AI, and securing loot. We got Tons of loot. Tons. Really good stuff. Armor, mods, and a AK that does 5200 dps. ‘Steady Death Dealer’ is the name I dub it. Then later, a M44 sniper that does 3200 per shot and a 870 shotty with 4700 per shot. Ended the night just now with DZ rank 13.

Ready to roll through the weekend!

DZ is the sweet spot. Wish the whole game was DZ with campaign blended in. Maybe…

We popped the cork tonight. Cheers!!

Dark Souls 3 launches in a month!

Oh, and I should able to get some division time in tonight (i think).

OT: Ori and The Blind Forest “definitive edition” is only 4.99. Incredible game if you are at all into platformers. Also, really hard lol

Only $4.99 for owner’s of the original version, Zos. Otherwise it’s $19.99.

    • March 13, 2016 12:57 pm

Ahhh, that makes sense (although not made clear). Still worth the price of entry imo. Especially if normal version is discounted.

I think I’ve made it through about 3 primary missions in TD. Beyond needing to grind threw the MSG mission again, good stuff! The gunplay is satisfying, but my loot has been pretty lame so far. Even to the point where the game kept reminding me my gear sucked (without giving me better drops lol).

I will not resort to buying gear from the merchant. Blank, what is the best method of dealing with extra inventory? Destroy for resources or sell at merch?

If you definitely dont want to buy ANY gear or weapons from the vendor’s, definitely deconstruct everything. Your gathered weapon parts, fabric, electronics and tools will come in handy once you’re lvl 30 and need high-end pieces to craft for the best weapons. Buying high end weapons also requires you have the parts and tools for it as well.

RoBBins is correct that the primary thing to do is deconstruct. However, I only do that for blues & purples. As RoBBins has already said, the blues materials can be converted to high-end crafting materials. All common (gray) & green weapons & gear should be sold. After you fully upgrade the Tech Wing, you’ll be able to purchase superior (purple) & high-end (orange) goods with regular credits, but they come at ridiculously high prices.

Quick Xbox Announcements regarding ID@Xbox. The biggest one:

    — Cross-Network gaming opened. In addition to Win10/Xbox cross platform play, this allows other PC ecosystem and even other consoles.

They even name drop Rocket League, which will support cross play with ANY PC gamers AND they have an open invitation for other console networks to support cross play!

  7. March 14, 2016 8:43 pm

I wonder what Microsoft has planned for E3, let alone //Build and GDC. They have been dropping bombs left and right. Usually kept for E3 reveals.

  8. March 14, 2016 9:44 pm

First, thanks for the info on selling and deconstructing. Didn’t know the benefit of deconstructing.

    Second, the Gear 4 MP

    12) Balance is important to The Coalition:

The Studio has introduced a new takedown system that allows players to initiate a series of close-combat melee takedowns. In single player these might become fairly easy to pull off, but The Coalition has worked hard to ensure that, in multiplayer, players on the receiving end of these have several ways to counter the attacks and escape before a knife ends up in their brainpan.

This should mean that there will be no stun involved when engaging in close combat.

Gears 4 Beta hitting our faces on April 18. Not sure of region restrictions, but hopefully everyone can access.

Apparently they will be announcing an entirely new gametype during the length of the beta as well.

Cornie messaged me last night just when I was signing off for the night. He hit level thirty and is ready to hit the DZ. This Friday will be the start of my one week spring vacation. I’ve got a few errands around the house, but I’ll be mixing them in with my time in NYC.

BTW: Don’t craft the Damascus pistol because one of the last missions will garner you its high-end blueprint. The pistol is simply garbage, and it simply isn’t worth the high-end crafting materials.

Nice! Next step for me is to hit DZ rank 50 for that sexy high-end AUG blueprint. I must have it.

    • March 15, 2016 5:36 pm

After waiting out the 3 hour maintenance time, and then getting “connection” problems, I gave up, watched BCS, and then tried once more. By this time, I only had a half hour left in me. Cornie joined me to do the Lincoln mission which we completed in about 10 minutes. SP is very fun, but playing with someone else to ensure you don’t die/rinse/repeat, and that you DO finish the mission, is much more satisfying.

Please keep the hints coming, because they are helpful.

    • March 15, 2016 5:33 pm

Please tell me you watched that epic video! I can see you playin’ that. You may not think you like it, but I swear, every avatar, including the chick ones, had Zoso Fan written above them.

New Cryengine announced (Cryengine 5) and… is “pay what you want”. As in, completely free beyond what you decide to give them.

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/3044170/software/crytek-reveals-pay-what-you-want-cryengine-v-new-virtual-reality-benchmarking-tool.html

This differs from most engines, like UE4 which is free to use but you must pay royalties once you product ships.

Also, Cryengine 5 comes built for C# and DX12.

  12. March 15, 2016 5:24 pm

I’m just gonna keep on posting LOL (this has quietly become one of the most interesting times in the gaming industry).

Playstation VR launches in october, for… 399$.

Price is correct for the specs, which are significantly lower than Oculus/Vive. Actually, it looks like the specs are pretty comparable to the Oculus and Vive. Slightly lower end, but not significantly. For that, the price is really impressive. The thing is, there are a ton of PS4 owners out there, and the cost of entry is a total 399$ vs 700$+an entire gaming rig.

I think the price is nice enough to appeal to current PS4 users, but prob wont attract new PS4 buyers. There will be an exclusive version of Battlefront too, which is cool. I can see Sony offering a Holiday bundle this year with VR, that may be a HUGE seller.

Microsoft’s cross-console gameplay is still the biggest news this week for me. I am hoping Sony responds and is on board (i feel like Microsoft is strong arming them to). As I said when Sony announced their VR initiative, Microsoft may be too late to “join the party” on the VR movement. There is a ton of potential, and the hololens (while awesome) is $3000 just for a dev kit with very limited battery life.

GDC is going on, and all the talk is in VR. Sony has 50+ titles that are VR games launching before the end of the year. This is just another reason to bring developers to their platform that are interested in the medium.

  13. March 15, 2016 5:45 pm

Lovin’ the flow of comments/info/OT Zos! Thanks!

WIth MS stepping off the “generation” belt for console manufacture, they are now completely free to embrace any or all of the VR hardware. It reminds me a little of their correct decision to not include a BluRay or HD drive in their 360. See what happens and then provide options to adopt.

At the same time, Sony is just slaughtering them with this upcoming VR deal. Though it may not be a system seller for you, it will be for some people. Ad1ft is just about to be released, and it looks fantastic (darn near system seller stuff for a guy like me who loves space)!

As for Gears Beta, WOOT! You bet I will be trying their wares! I have zero expectations, but I am excited to try for free.

More OT. Apparently, there will be another Indiana Jones. I think I just puked in my mouth a little.

    • March 15, 2016 5:57 pm

Yeah, i think PSVR will sell like crazy. In fact, this will likely be the most popular VR unit of the three big options. Hopefully Microsoft has something else up their sleeve for E3.

Regarding Dr. Jones, he will be nearing 80 when the movie is released… he belongs in a museum at this point LOL.

At least luney lucas isn’t involved this time. Spielberg’s direction in last movie was really the only redeeming quality. BUT, I am much less hopeful for this than SW:TFA.

    • March 15, 2016 6:02 pm

My guess: Microsoft announces partnership with Oculus (who uses Windows+XB1 controller already). Has a new improved XB1 SKU, as well as a processing unit (like PSVR) that makes XBOX rift compatible.

    • March 15, 2016 10:09 pm

Very possible. I am partial to Hive tech, and of course, my favorite is HoloLens when it grows up and gets cheap.

      OT

  14. March 16, 2016 5:25 pm

Microsoft offering “built into XBL” tournaments. This includes tracking stats etc. Will allow developers to build in regular tournaments, as a part of XBL (vs building your own systems etc which is very hard and almost no devs do it).

Also, windows 10 universal apps coming to Xbone in the summer (possibly earlier for preview). Details coming at //Build conference later this month.

After looking more at the PSVR, games look really good and the specs are much higher than anticipated. That being said, 399$ does not include move controllers (required for some) and the PS4 camera (WHICH IS REQUIRED FOR PSVR). Some retailers have the camera as low as 40$, but brings price closer to Oculus which includes all peripherals. That being said PS4 cost VS oculus capable PC is no brainer.

The whole “graphics to cost ratio” is even crazier looking at the fidelity of the PSVR apps. They look really good.

  15. March 16, 2016 6:11 pm

Right now, PS4 owners/fanbois are having a heyday.

Still, I like the franchises I can get on Xbox, namely Gears 4.

    And OT Bwahahahahaha

  16. March 16, 2016 9:56 pm

    Rinse and Repeat. And Repeat…

The most boring campaign I can recall playing.

    Fetch. Fetch. Fetch.

Wide open world and nothing to do but shoot the same guys in red hats, and flame throwers.

Have to be the same level as members in your squad to do Anything.

Not the game for me. Just feels like a grind to get to 30. Then what?

A great sandbox potential but no sand. Just cat poop…

DZ is just a little better, but would rather just pop BF4 back in the tray if I want PvP.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

    • March 16, 2016 10:15 pm

      LOL!

I will say this. I am tired of the “maintenance” always being in the early evening, my best time for playing. However, I have had some fun sessions by myself and with Cornie. I really enjoy the gunplay and unlike MPvs in any game, I can take my time to line up my shots. It has been a very long time since I have played AI in this kind of shooter.

Also, as soon as the mission starts, first thing I do is hold X and mute the lady talking about it. I don’t “read” this “magazine” for the “articles”. 😉

It is perplexing that Massive did not offer “Raids”. That just seems like a staple for this type of game, isn’t it?

    • March 17, 2016 5:53 am

yep. Pretty much what I have read so far in other places. No raids, no really unique guns and gear. No special events and very limited in the “co-op” and “vs” options.

However they freaking knocked it out of the ballpark in the perfect time to release this as there is nothing going on.

If you build your base so that all 3 wings are at 100%, and you do a good amount of side missions after your base is maxed out, the grind to hit 30 really isn’t that bad. I thought it was pretty quick to level to 30 personally. DZ is definitely where the game’s longevity comes in, and the first free DLC is releasing next month giving us these mysterious “Incursions” that everyone is hell bent on saying are this games Raid(s).

Who knows. Kenai, you cant completely change your mind on the game within 6 days. At least wait until some of the DLC comes out before you make a final judgment on it. Blank and I roll through with his former student and one of my buddies, and we have a blast in the DZ and doing daily/challenging missions. Once loot trading becomes available, I feel like that’ll make the DZ incredibly more intriguing for everyone to go in and kill any and all bosses (named enemies). If they happen to drop a yellow that you already have, you can pawn it off to someone who may need/want it.

The first 5 months we are going to get a good chunk of content for this game. Have faith, people!

    • March 17, 2016 7:06 pm

I am level 21 now. Had a great time with Cornie last night – he knows a ton of useful things about the game already. He is loving it and says that the fun doesn’t really begin until you get to level 30.

I immediately drew the “Black Belt” analogy – in martial arts, the “black belt” is greatly misunderstood to mean mastery, when what it really means is the person has some basic understanding and ability in the fundamentals. Once you have your black belt, that is when the real learning and fighting begins.

I am enjoying the missions, big and small. I look forward to diggin’ deeper and playing with a bigger crew where tactics and communication become more important.

Yes, this is a long haul game. 🙂

      Herandar, did you buy it?

Worth reading, even if you don’t agree.

Good find! Thanks for sharing. Great points to which I am philosophically inclined to support.

Ultimately, however, I don’t have enough respect for story in almost all games, to spend much time at all thinking about them. They truly are “porn” for me. The story just there to set up the interesting skirmish. That is why I love Gears so much. It never tries to be more than muscular dudebros breakin’ the rules to kill some bad guys and save the world.

Dead Space 2 was different because of “Unitology”. So good.

Anyway, if I want story or commentary on the human condition, I will read/watch things like Shakespeare, Milton, Blade Runner, Alien(s), The Thing, Band of Brothers, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Generation Kill, etc. where I can get in 10 minutes what it takes games 15 hours to tell (poorly).

(You mentioned that Valiant Hearts had a good story, and I believe you. I just didn’t make the time to play it.)

    • March 17, 2016 9:01 am

Herandar. I won’t let you down. However it seems we are never on at the same time. Maybe text me the next time you are playing (if I’m not on) during my ‘normal’ time (i.e 8pm to 11pm on a weekday).

Tycho seems to really like The Division! I have already logged over 170 hours on TD. That is ridiculous to actually admit that, but no other game other than the Gears & Diablo franchises, respectively, have deserved that kind of attention from me. Penny Arcade’s Kiko summed it up the best by stating that,”This is all I want in a game.” Talk about hitting the nail on the head.

BTW: Just a word of advice for those venturing into the Dark Zone. Don’t even think about going in if you haven’t maxed your PvE level to thirty. You will be taken out because it just screams noob, and the players out there will make you easy prey. Seeing a player that doesn’t have a thirty rank over their head is like the analogy of wolves chasing a snowshoe rabbit. Eventually, it doesn’t end well for the rabbit who will be torn to shreds. Anyone even thinking that they should enter the DZ below the rank of thirty will experience nothing but frustration because they are going to be simply melted. That might explain the voices of frustration & dismissals of the game in this community.

If you’re planning on entering the DZ, I highly recommend an SMG/AR & shottie set-up. That kit is not for the AI enemies, rather it’s for actual humans who decide to go rogue. Rolling with a DMR (sniper rifle) can’t punish attacking humans enough to drive them back. Humans tend to strafe & juke, and you’ll need weapons that have high rate of fire & bullet spread. The DMR is only viable in situational NPC encounters.

Last night, our team which comprised of Cornie, Dexter (my former student), Galvinnicus (one of my Diablo 3 friends), & myself were ambushed by some high-level kitted rogues. They saw that Dexter made a blunder by burning his Tactical signature skill (cooldown is long) on the NPC boss in the Sporting Goods store. After the sig skill had depleted, they decided the time was right to pounce on us. I called for Cornie to immediately pop his Survivor sig skill which gives us an armor/defense bonus & I popped my Recovery sig skill to revive two downed teammates. We managed to kill two of the rogues & almost killing the third, but the remaining two were able to take us out because our fourth player, Galvinnicus, failed to pop his Recovery skill because that was literally his first experience in the DZ. When we respawned at the nearest checkpoint, we hunted those bastards down & payback was a bitch. Unfortunately, they were able to extract the high-end loot that they pilfered off of Dexter’s body.

Signature skills should ONLY be burned when you’re facing humans or if the team is in dire straits with high-level NPC mobs. Last night’s initial failure was a clear example of that. Synergy is vitally important to success in the DZ. Knowing your role & playing to its strengths are what makes solid teams shine.

I cannot wait until we roll with the usual crew. I’m holding onto the hopes of that because we’ve always gelled as a group since we’ve gamed together for so long. Zos, get your character up to level thirty as fast as you can. We need to wreck some fools. Look, I know that Rocket League is a blast, but TD deserves your attention as well. Cornie is already tweaking his character with better gear & weapons. Suns, when you return from Canada, I know that you’re chomping at the bit to roll with us. rED & Stephy, get the damn game already!

    • March 25, 2016 10:02 am

Regard the DZ does it not scale with level? I thought if you were lower level, you were put with other similarly leveled characters.

With my spring vacation coming to an end, my days of burning the midnight oil are relegated to three more days. I’d love it if Cornie wouldn’t appear off-line. I want to roll in the DZ with Frosty to slay more rogue agents. He’s already doubled my score 21 vs. 11. Does the kid have any game that he’s mediocre at? LOL
