Ark:SE Spotlight: Castoroides!

February 23, 2016
by

Now that Cornie and I have poop processing under control with Doug the Bug, it has freed us up for crafting, caving, cooking, hunting, and perhaps, eventually, diving.  The castoroides should be able to help us in that department, and in the collection of wood, as it is the most efficient wood gatherer on the island.  And tangentially OT, Frenik (or should I call you 31! – days playing the game) let us know what you think of Far Cry Primal.  Looks SO good!

I love it. The combat is so sweet and well executed that it’s just fun running around and killing stuff. The only thing I am worried about at this point is longevity. Obviously compared to a game like Ark it’s not going to have much.

I tamed most of the animals in less than 7 hours. Granted taming in Primal is not the same focus as Ark. Primal is more geared towards having the tames being your combat buddy. Basically they each become a specialist in certain situations, the only real drawback is that some tames are stepping stones, so after you unlock the sabertooth, the bears and other key tames, you don’t necessarily need to call on a wolf for example.

The game is very cinematic. Very nice facial animations and voice acting. Very nice “Dream” sequences that break away from the reality, etc.

It does seem like compared to Far Cry 4, it is very limited in the story department, and it doesn’t seem to have a “decision” structure (In 4 you could decide who rose to take leadership in your faction).

It’s basically let’s kill the rival tribes and establish the tribe around the whole map.

Now I am not really disappointed in that, because well the game is about pre-historic civilizations, so I didn’t really expect much from that department. A lot of reviews like to hammer the game in comparison to 4, but who are we kidding? Cavemen with complex plots, etc. ?

but anyways the combat is fun. It made me feel like the old Halos. Headshots were headshots, and aside from Mammoths who are tanky as heck, everything else didn’t feel like it required a perfect sequence of landing blows in order to kill. Each weapon has it’s purpose, and there’s different variations and upgrades for each.

I just loved being able to step in a game and accomplish a lot while having fun without having to grind the insane amount of grind there is in Ark at the higher levels.

I wouldn’t have paid full price for this game, but it came at a perfect time to take a break from Ark. I am definitely not getting The Division, so this is a nice break.

But yeah as for Ark, I am toning it down. In servers is just ridiculous the amount of work you have to put in to get to 85, and some of the upgrades are not worth it by then. Industrial Forge was the one thing I was looking forward, but by now I have so much metal stored, there really is no purpose for it.

The only thing to be done in PvE is building and Taming. Building I had my share. Did too many bases, pens, etc.

Taming I did a few high level tames, and was prepping for kibble max tames, but since I mostly played by myself, there was really no point in having those.

Found a group of guys who needed help with the game and were pretty much a mellow bunch, so I joined them up to help them out and eventually pass them over my stuff. So the server is basically to log in and chat, have no interest in grinding out the rest.

The single player i am already 75, without putting much time. I am just going to finish up my dossier. Tame a Giga and do all the stuff that would require a lot of prep in server.

It’s been fun and quite a long time of playing, but I’m ready to move on to other games.

Destiny is going to have more DLC throughout the year. Uncharted 4 is slated for April (if it makes it), then Doom, and the official release for Ark, Overwatch, Crackdown 3, etc.

It will not be long before the gaming schedule gets hectic again, and I haven’t even played the games from last fall since Ark.

Not thinking about Gears 4 yet. UE was a two week affair at most. Then there’s Mass Effect: Andromeda, which could probably clear the slate of gaming for a long time.

Riding Tames in Primal is just sweet. Unlike Ark you can only ride a few, but that limitation is made up by being able to attack from your tame.

That is just awesome because it brings the great on foot combat to being on top of your mount, which you can leave and the mount goes crazy instantly attacking.

The other thing I noticed is how good the animal AI is. In Ark is almost a Fight or Flee dynamic that switches on and off, very computer based script.

In Primal if you are hanging out at night with your tame, depending on what animal you have other animals like Wolves will size you up first. They make growling noises and look at you with shiny eyes straight out of “The Grey”, if you have Dhole for example. They will try to attack you.

If you have a Sabertooth, he will back them off.

Even something as simple as standing idle it shows the difference. In Ark you have that stupid tail swag motion that every freaking Dino does (except ones without tails.)

Primal each tame has a different idle animation. It’s just part of the immersive cinematic experience!

I get the hint. 😉 “Thou never shalt hear herald anymore.” (on this game, anyway).

Thanks for the comments, Frenik. Good stuff. Not worried about the criticisms of Ark, because they are true, the game hasn’t even gone gold yet so there will still be changes, and ultimately, I have already played it more than most of the next gen games put together (with the exception of Gears) so I got my money’s worth.

And, The Division, is just around the corner!

LOL! Naw, I am about the only one playing it now. More than anything, I am just in awe with the continued flow of content and care they are giving the game.

And speaking of Angry and Jelly, you realize that if PvZ:GW2 offered gaming with North Americans, this place would be crazy with content for that game.

Further OT, our network is now working well, even during prime time, and we are getting 251Mbps Down with 30 Up.

      THIS.

Heard a YouTube commenter claim that Overwatch reminds them of TimeSplitters, which still is one of my favorite game series of all time. So I may be joining you on the Overwatch train, Suns.

Sounds great, Herandar! I am pretty sure it will be the best at what it is trying to be. I think that the release, however, will be late spring rather than early spring, so we will have time to get our Division on.

Meanwhile on The Ark… We are back on server 67. We joined a great tribe (The Chilli’s). They are Jamaican family that lives in London. Bunch of cousins, uncles and siblings. We’ve already helped them make a sweet base and lots of tames. Ping has a new zoo.

The coolest thing happened yesterday. We were helping out a couple old Ark friends that were in our party. We were at their base on the other end of the island, and guess who we run into. Dom! He was an awesome member in our tribe. Seth’s buddy and one of our best players. Last night was the first time he was on Ark since all the shit went down. Fate? Fortune? Yes. New tribe member. Sweet! We are having fun.

And here it is. Battlefield Friends playing ARK

Ha ha! One of the best games from last year and this!

And as if it were because you started playing again…

P.S. Thanks for the “Uncle Drew” clip! I lost it when he dunked his own backboard alley-oop! So much fun!
