RS:S Scratching an Itch

The footage above is not a boast, just a good ending to a round on Hard and a showcase of the RS:S gameplay.  Lots of noob mistakes (including forgetting to use 3 round bursts at the beginning) but lots of fun.  I definitely want to pick this up after it gets discounted.  The team awareness and cooperation necessary to be successful is reminiscent of L4D.  That is an itch I haven’t scratched in a long time.

While I have no doubt as to how much fun this game is and could be, having had one more chance at it with Cornie the other night, I now have two concerns. The two of us alone beat the AI on normal, with almost no loss of health and with plenty of time left. Hard is more difficult, but not that much more as you can see above. If you play the game with patience, full communication, proper tactics, and SILENCERS, it becomes much, much easier. The Bombers make the game much more difficult, but in a cheap sort of way. The difficulty they add to the game is almost random -, if you had bad luck, there was nothing you could do about it. What I mean by this is that even realism will be quite beatable once we master the things I listed above. That leaves the public. The problem is, there won’t be a big community for this game, especially around the time that we want to buy it. There are no dedicated servers, so finding a “fair” game network-wise is going to be almost impossible.

Is the game fun? Absolutely, in the most refreshing and challenging way. Is it going to provide long term enjoyment? I have serious doubts. Hmm….

Sadly, I don’t think this game can break out of it’s niche. There will be the hardcore fans who play this non-stop and then there will be everyone else. Considering I couldn’t even get into a MPvs game on Saturday night… I’m not expecting there to be many players after a month.

I would have been interested a few years ago, I loved RB6 series all the way to the original.

However there are so many options for Co-op play right now that it would be hard to justify full price or even budget price.

Plus they are releasing this after BLOPS 3 and no story. Good luck with that Unisoft. Tax Write-off?
