Gears of War Trailers

July 9, 2015

After watching the outstanding IGN Vidcast with Phil Spencer, Peter Moore, and Seamus Blackley, I had to go back and re-watch the Gears of War Trailers which those three called a watershed moment in games marketing. I have gathered them all into a single post, the best copies I could find (playlist here).  I have also added links to YouTube versions of the full songs (playlist here). I am curious and hopeful that The Coalition will release a remaster of “Mad World“. Any gamers who played the original but haven’t touched gaming in a while, would undoubtedly be hit with a wave of nostalgia if it suddenly popped up in the middle of the summer TV viewing.

I look forward to the promotional videos for Gears 4. I don’t imagine they will break with tradition.

Mad World – Gears of War Song “Mad World” Gary Jules

Last Day – Gears of War 2 Song “How It Ends” DeVotchka

Rendezvous With Death – Gears of War 2 Poem “I Have a Rendezvous With Death” Alan Seeger

Ashes To Ashes – Gears of War 3 Song Heron Blue Sun Kil Moon

Dust To Dust – Gears of War 3 Song “Into Dust” Mazzy Star

Regarding the trailers, Mad World especially was a special trailer. I remember how hyped we were for a new trailer, and it absolutely blew me away.

Starting Aug 25, every Xbox One will come with Gears UE

The ‘Mad World’ trailer actually reached across games marketing because it caused many in the general public to take notice. One thing that it definitely did was make Gears cross into pop culture. The genius of the marketing of that franchise was remarkable. Then again, MS has always brought it when it comes to marketing games such as Halo and the snazzy 360 commercials. Even the initial XB1 “Jump in.” commercial was both humorous and well produced.

This “Jump In” ad, in particular, also mentioned in the vidcast, was awesome!

I’ve already seen this when it was up a few hours after their panel, and don’t waste your time. The stuff that’s been reported from the panel are enough. Seriously. The panel was poorly paced and they really only talked about the cutscenes.

I watched it anyway. John DiMaggio as a voice actor is second to none, but that can’t be said about his moderating. lol

I enjoyed the showing of the various forms of that particular cutscene, comparing and contrasting. Also, I didn’t realize that the map Boxes was taken from the vending machine area of War Machine, or that the 2v2 Gnashers Only gametype was a fan made house rules gametype.

Hearing about the PC version made me wonder to what extent the users will have control over making new content. Fan-made maps and gametypes, if that is possible, could be crazy, in an enviable sort of way.

Thanks for the warning, Kenny. I am too interested in Gears right now to pass anything up, especially when it involves the horse’s mouth. ❤

The gnashers-only battles are what created the “ballerific!” Remember, when we stepped back, signaled that we were ready by meleeing with our gnashers, and went bawls out? Damn those were awesome moments! Wooo!!!

I can never be friendly with Really Doe in Gears anymore after all those Ballerific battle losses… 😥
