E3 2015

June 14, 2015

Bethesda starts the expo off with their conference live at the writing of this post. Those on the One should have access to the various live Twitch feeds, but for those who aren’t on Live right now, or in the event that it goes down, Game Informer is, and will continue to, broadcast live all of the shows. Twitch also has their own hub. FYI, the gore in DOOM makes Gears look like Mario.

UPDATE: YouTube is “Twitchin” this stuff!

Zos & I were text chatting on our iPhones throughout Bethesda’s press conference. Doom looked very fast paced & filled with gore. It needs MP, and it’s id’s second go around with the title since they completely 86ed the previous build because it lacked the essence of Doom. I asked Zos if the game is still relevant because of gamers’ tastes now. I loved Doom 3 on the OG Xbox, but I’ve moved on.

Dishonored 2 was nothing but a cutscene without any actual gameplay. Nothing to get excited about. Let’s move on until we see something of substance, folks. Battlecry looked like utter garbage. An edgier copy of Team Fortress. Really, Bethesda? Zos also agreed that it looked like crap even when it was shown a year ago. That game can stay in beta hell as far as I’m concerned. That game will be a bust when it eventually sees retail launch. Everything that Bethesda announced for Elder Scroll was a fail. Psst, take a look at what CD Projekt Red did with The Witcher 3, Bethesda. Nuff said.

The rest of the show was devoted to everything Fallout. You can obviously tell that the game was meant for previous gen which explains the stilted character animations, poor textures, underwhelming visuals, and lacking of now-gen expectations. Yeah, the base building is interesting, but Fallout 4 looks more like an expansion than a new game. The only thing that caught me off guard was Todd Howard’s announcement that it will be coming out this November. I didn’t see that coming at all. The iPhone game, Fallout Shelter, is already downloaded on both Zos & my iPhones after the conference ended. Zos and I were laughing that the “McDonald’s” Bethesda freebie toys/figures got the loudest applause. LMAO, but it’s nice to have a company pay it forward to the gamers. Other than those impressions, it was “meh.”

OT: Steph Curry had some ridiculous highlight reel plays on tonight’s game. GS is on the brink of claiming the championship trophy. Jerry West is a stinking genius. Jerry Buss must be turning over in his grave for letting his ego get in the way of letting West go as the GM. Talk about stupid. Bravo to the genius of Jerry West for putting together that young team. It will be ridiculous for my Clippers to overtake them even though I know Griffin, Paul, & Jordan are destined for greatness as a trio. Damn it!

As much as I want to like the Gears 4 gameplay presentation, I was pretty disappointed with the lack of action in it. It was just a drawn out chase scene basically. However, it looks gorgeous as expected, and I still want to play it. Hopefully The Coalition doesnt mess anything up. It looked like it completely stuck to the Gears of War roots, gameplay wise.

Also, I just registered for the Gears Ultimate Edition beta, which is a pain in the ass to actually get to that page on their website. It said to check my email within 24 hours for my codes (plural obviously), so if anyone cant get thru the website and needs a code, let me know on here!

Ok so it lied to me. It said codes, but only gave me 1 πŸ˜₯ Sorry guys.

  5. June 15, 2015 2:18 pm

    My impressions.

Excited to try Gigantic this August. Gears 4 has very different art direction and that may be a nice change in the long run. The beast they faced at the end of the video was very different from the beasts we fought in the previous Gears. Anyway, it looks Ultimate Edition August 25? 16?

Thus seals the fate of The Division. it could still be fun, but major letdowns in all areas.

    — Graphical Fidelity worse than most games shown
    — Still no explanation of what the F’in game is.
    — Same areas/combat shown.
    — BETA in December… if that doesn’t get delayed. We are lucky if we see anything else in 2016.

Beyond that, this was a great E3 for Microsoft. building on last year’s showing, the conference was all about games games and games.

Backwards compat / Valve VR / GEARS HD Beta today were the big surprises for me. The Rare collection is great, and lots of great new IP goodness (DayZ creator’s next game!).

I love you guys, but you need to relax. They over-revealed at first and they have been and are continuing to over-correct by under-revealing ever since. Doesn’t change the gameplay. The game still looks really good. PvPvE in an ever-shifting alliance? Brilliant.

The game is a serious, non-cartoony Borderlands set in New York during a potentially apocalyptic event. With MMO player interactions.

Just wait until it is playable and/or released before you pass judgment. Please??

    • June 16, 2015 1:28 pm

The trailer we saw from E3 was disappointing to say the least. Fragmented bits of story and action, seemingly dumbed down graphics. However, the 5 minute video (from the Dark Zone) looks Quite Nice. Similar to what we saw from last year. After seeing that, I’m going to just reserve judgement. I no longer see “Epic Fail”, Let’s wait till the December Beta and then we’ll know more.

Realistically, Division is the only new community game on our horizon. I really Hope it is a winner, because… What else is there? Halo 5?!

  7. June 15, 2015 2:33 pm

They didn’t even waste any time on the new OS/Sales any of the typical stuff we see. This is a new (better) era for Xbox.

      @GEARSOFWAR
Tweeted : We are aware that some Gears of War beta tokens are not redeeming properly. The Xbox Live team is working on a fix.

  8. June 15, 2015 6:31 pm

Well, getting a beta ticket so that we can “see” for ourselves just how good the Ultimate Edition is (I am talking about MPvs here) is a great way for them to increase their chances of getting this customer to buy. I know that Zos and Blank, with their American prices and shared cost will be all “Shut up and take my money”. But I want to try this for myself before I publicly declare that I will be spending $80CAN on my own (the boys have no interest).

I will be all over that “testing” as soon as they fix their Beta program. Dedicated servers and house rules may make this game available to us again. And I haven’t loved any MP more than I did Gears 1.

I didn’t say much about the Elite controller above, but that was without a doubt, one of the highlights for me. Very exciting.

And as expressed by others above, the state of The Division has pushed it completely off my radar. If I can get a spot in the winter beta, and if I like it, only then will I even think about buying it. As of right now, I am not interested in even supporting Ubisoft anymore. I do not enjoy the A.C. series at all, and the only other games I wanted, aside from the fabulous Rayman series, were RS:S and TD. Both of those look like last gen CoD titles, even the animations were shit-ified. Pretty doesn’t gameplay make, but downright ugly is the opposite direction I thought we were going with this stuff, and gorgeous was one of the reasons I was willing to brave the RPG elements (whatever those might be) of the game. Ubisoft should consider themselves to now be in a damage control situation. Forthrightness and information is their only way out, afaiac.

Elite controller will be priced at $150 according to MS.

  9. June 15, 2015 6:45 pm

The Ultimate Edition Beta is being Streamed as I type this.

Fallout is doing the stream and he is showing off the Elite controller and providing his impressions as he plays.

UPDATE: “Not available to download in Germany, Korea, China and Japan.” I don’t know if our machines being “Canadian” are going to help me bypass this or not. 😦

  10. June 15, 2015 7:48 pm

YIKES! at 150 bucks for the new controller. I have, however, always maintained that something we use so much should be at least as personalized as a glove for baseball. I am still really interested in it, though purchase will probably not happen.

PvZ is a day one purchase. I will be pre-ordering this puppy! SO MUCH NEW content even if they core is the same. So colorful and fun.

Well, the SCUF controllers start at $200, so the official Elite controller from MS is a deal. I highly doubt that I’ll get one, but it is definitely sweet.

Hey, the two new characters featured in the Gears 4 gameplay are JD & Kate. I speculated with asks that JD might be Marcus & Anya’s son & the game is set in the future. He even has blue eyes like Marcus. His initials could stand for James/John Dominic or something along those lines. Creatures of Sera have mutated due to the “elimination” of lambency from Imulsion. I’m just spitballing here, guys.

The backwards compatibility will spur 360 gamers to adopt the XB1 now because they’ll have access to their old games. The dig on Sony by not charging for gamers’ previous game purchases was a total win. Eighteen games will be available starting today for Preview members & more will be compatible and it launches to the masses later this year. Total win & great move. Also, Spencer didn’t bog down the conference by droning on & on about Windows 10 cross platform with XB1 was a good move. Spencer made this about the games like last year. What an awesome time to “Jump Ahead.”

Sony Press Conference was full of “big announcements”… about non exclusive titles. There were only a handful of actual console exclusives, most were already known/announced and none are coming out this year.

I don’t think this was an epic fail of a conference, cause lots of good news, but nothing was said.

Project morpheus was practically non-existent. At GDC, they made it sound like it was about to ship. I think two things happened 1. Rumors were that it would be “several” hundred. 2. Microsoft made strategic partnerships with Oculus/Valve VR, not to mention the awesome Minecraft tech with Hololens.

    I MEAN SERIOUSLY

    • June 15, 2015 11:26 pm

Zos, I am totally with you on the awesomeness of Hololens – a system seller – IF it actually has the range (width) of vision that they keep showing in the videos. Several reviews that I read from their previous demo was that it was darn near like looking through a keyhole – very, very narrow where the actual effect could be observed. Of course, as the hardware becomes cheaper, the range of vision can be expanded, but I want to try it myself, or hear from a trusted friend just how much like the demo that we see here, is the actual experience.

RoBBins, thanks for the offer of the Beta ticket. I am optimistic that within the next day I should get my own. The question will be whether I am IP filtered or just the registered address of the account is what determines where I am. Here’s to hoping.

And here is another game that I would absolutely not buy without trying first. However, because DICE so often demos their games, I am confident that I will get to give Battlefront a spin. It sure *looks* awesome!

    • June 16, 2015 5:45 pm

Field of view is the main problem with AR. Microsoft has already mentioned it is one of their primary focuses. Apparently they had a Halo 5 HoloLens demo at e3 that was stunning.

While the Sony press conference wasn’t an epic fail, it failed nevertheless. The pacing was god awful. Anyone watching could witness the sea of journalists and bloggers waiting for the conference to end so they could tear Sony a new one. Sony showed a ton of multiplatform games, timed exclusive content, and their highly anticipated Uncharted 4 demo crashed in front of all of the press and fanboys. The awkwardness of how the Naughty Dog guy that was supposed to demo it in real-time walking off stage was priceless. Haha. Not only that but there wasn’t much wow factor considering that UC 2 & 3 already looked so beautiful.

Sony has criticized MS’ practice of purchasing exclusive content in the past, but yet they’re left to that practice now because they don’t have anything to offer this holiday yet again. Pot calling the kettle black, huh? I posed the question to Zos that if No Man’s Sky were officially announced for multiplatform a would anyone really care. The Sony clones are whooping it up simply because it’s coming to PS4 first. Trust me when I say that they can have it because there’s nothing interesting about it that Mass Effect can’t fill. I will say that the only cool thing that was shown was the exclusive Scarecrow Nightmare content that will be exclusive to PS4’s Batman:AK. That was downright cool in first-person.

BTW: The Gears beta has texture pop-in like the previous titles. However, the 60 fps makes for very fast movement that really takes getting used to. I only managed to get two kills & three downs with nine deaths in my team deathmatch session. Jeez, I hate team deathmatch mode. That’s not what Gears was, is, or should be about.

    • June 15, 2015 11:34 pm

So you are in! You got your beta code and it works! WOOT!

(Nothing new about the gametype. We knew that from the Gears 2 days.)

      June 16, 2015 1:40 am

Playing as I type this. Still has the clunky feel to it that gears 1 had, but the 60 FPS is fantastic for MP. To no surprise, my first kill was a long shot headshot (which sounds fucking incredible now). The gnasher definitely feels completely different. Still getting used to it. Hopefully I can grab a few games with you guys soon!

      June 16, 2015 2:22 am

After playing 4 matches, I can safely say that the dedicated servers and 60FPS make this game feel waaaaaay different. Shots coming out of the barrel of your gun instead of the middle of the screen takes some time to get used to for sure.

A couple of things that I’ve noticed so far are ::

      1. There isnt really any gore besides the gibbing, but even with that, the body parts just blow up basically without any blood whatsoever. As you can imagine, sniper headshots are not the same for now 😦

      2. There has yet to be, with my experience anyway, any two-piecing. All shotty battles have been completely fair with no elbows being thrown towards each other. This has been one of the better experiences so far for me.

      3. TDM needs to go. As much as I would like to enjoy it, it does not beat the intensity and adrenaline pumping gameplay we all know and love from Execution. They NEED to put Execution in this game ASAP. I will not buy this until Execution is confirmed for this remake. Otherwise I’ll wait until Gears 4 releases.

    • June 16, 2015 2:35 am

RoBBins, thanks for taking the time to write some impressions. Agreed 100% about Execution. It is the quintessential Gears experience.

    • Blankman permalink*
      June 16, 2015 3:26 am

RoBBins, you are completely mistaken about the two-piecing not being prevalent. I was killed three times like that in shottie battles. It was rage inducing!

    • RoBBins permalink*
      June 17, 2015 2:03 am

@Blank Yes, I seem to have jinxed myself/us because I finally got two-pieced to end the match I just played on Canals lol. Not only was it a two-piece, but it was with the Longshot… I raged a little as to be expected.

Also, my one other complaint is that even though there are sensitivity sliders for all 3 settings like Gears 3, the target and zoom sensitivity seem a little too slow for me. (Im playing at maxed 30 for both, with look sens at 28). I dont know, maybe its just me, but its infuriating when I try to sweep shot with the sniper zoomed and the cursor barely moves.

Studying for my final tomorrow. Could only play 1 round, and rope-a-doped a few dudes.

Nice on the rope-a-dope, and good luck on your final!

Interested in microsofts presences at PC conference tomorrow.

  15. June 16, 2015 9:03 am

    Dayz of Division?

  16. June 16, 2015 5:13 pm

Much butter looking than the trailer. But… still nothing else really stated or shown that isn’t already known.

Also, the voice acting of the players is killing me.

In terms of DayZ, you can kill people for loot, but the entire structure of the game is really not comparable. Def more Borderlands, with the ability to kill players in the server.

How many players per server? How large are the “dark zones”?

The game could definitely be fun when it comes out, but who knows what it will even be when that happens. Ubisoft has a track record of features being demo’ed that don’t even exist at launch.

Xbox has an exclusive new game coming from the Day Z creator… even DayZ itself is apparently coming. It is just upsetting, because I was very excited for this game two years ago.

    • June 16, 2015 5:44 pm

Gears 1 HD is 40$. Considering everything was practically rebuilt, not bad considering many full price HD remakes.

    • Blankman permalink*
      June 16, 2015 5:58 pm

Oh yeah! Definitely a no brainer of a purchase now! Suns and I were just discussing the costs & Suns was weighing on whether to dive in or not. Perhaps the lower price will finally convince him. πŸ˜‰

The luster of The Division has diminished. The downgrade in the visuals have reached Watchdogs-level downgrade as you stated last night, Zos. Ubisoft is becoming notorious for misleading gamers with pie in the sky trailers.

  17. June 16, 2015 9:12 pm

@Herandar Thanks for jumpin’ and encouraging level-headed thinking. πŸ™‚

@Zos “Field of view” I couldn’t think of the term for that yesterday. VERY excited to hear that they are aware of the criticism and working on it. If anyone can invest the money to change something and make it better, it is Microsoft with their warchests of gold!

More on The Division and GoW:UE later. πŸ˜‰

  18. June 18, 2015 9:00 am

After the dust settled i am rethinking MS “win”. A controller I am not going to buy. A “player vs everything” “big boss” Halo which sort of echoes Titanfall and Destiny, like dude we have shot AI before ok? Lastly Backwards Compatibility. I love it at first glance but right next to my xbone there’s a 360, which doesn’t get turned on unless there’s a free game, and even with free games I don’t play it much. Ok so Gears 1 and 4, Gears 1 is nostalgia and I can see it lasting a month or two. Gears 4 is another can of worms that’s long ways from here.

I’m not saying PS won either. But if I could truly have those exclusives which they do add up in my book. That would definitely be bigger in my radar than what MS showed.

If the tables were turned and PS was the one with the laundry list of first party games and MS had the exclusives, like it had in other years, I would have scored it an easy “win”

I guess the only real reason I don’t see Sony winning is because I really don’t want to use the PS4. Otherwise the Destiny DLC exclusives would have made it for me. *sigh*
