Gwent – The Witcher’s CCG

May 25, 2015

Penny Arcade’s latest comic and blog post was all about the mini-game Gwent, a Collectible Card Game in The Witcher 3. Some gamers at IGN are claiming that it is better than Blizzard’s freedom-to-play Hearthstone. Watching them play a round made me wish I could buy just Gwent, and makes me wonder if CD Projekt RED might make it available as a stand-alone.  One thing is for sure, they will definitely be able to milk the DLC with new cards.

If they don’t produce both physical and digital forms of Gwent, they are missing out on a huge opportunity.

The most incredible thing about this game to me is the world building. Such a living, detailed, immersive world.

Zos, glad to hear someone agrees with my marketing convictions. 🙂

Apparently, they have already created the physical cards and packed some of them in with the Collector’s Edition for Xbox One (exclusive).

The Witcher III: Wild Hunt Collector’s Edition
    More details

The standard edition of the game
A giant, 33x24x26 cm (10″ w US), 100% hand painted, Polystone figure of Geralt of Rivia battling a Griffin
An exclusive, collector grade Witcher medallion
A one of a kind SteelBook
A two-hundred page artbook, containing breathtaking art from the game
A huge Outer and Inner Collector’s Boxes you can store your Witcher merchandise in!
An Exclusive CD with the Official Soundtrack
The Official, Developer-Created “The Witcher Universe: Compendium”
A Beautiful, Detailed Map of the In-Game World
A Set of Unique Witcher III Stickers
    A cloth game map
    Two Gwent card decks

149.95! Big bucks, but then decks of cards are often 15 or 20 bucks a piece.

Also, to Kenny and RoBBins, thanks for the mini-reviews in the other thread. Good stuff. And I repeat myself, I would love to watch some Twitch Streaming next time we are on together.

OT Apparently, Turtle Rock is/will be? adding a MONNNNNNNSTER!!!!! mode to Evolve – basically, forego the hunt and cut right to the chase fight. A very good idea. Now they just need to follow that with a proper Monster/Hunter choosing option, and both dedicated monsters and hunters will be happy world over.

OT2 Frenik, glad you are enjoying the Execution mode in Destiny. Cornie, Johann, and a Randomonium (where were you?!) won 3 victory Sets in a row. Only lost one match in 25. (Round -> Match -> Set) There was enough gravy for the Turkey, potatoes AND stuffing! They are flying their new banners now.

Have yet to try Gwent because I’m so intrigued with every quest and exploring the open world to find new enemies. This game is so goddamn good. Its almost TOO good. Never played the 1st game, played most of the 2nd on PC, but this one takes the cake for me easily. Easy front runner for GOTY already.

Until Dawn is my next highly anticipated new release. That and MGS5 are the only competitors for Witcher 3 IMO. Batman and Battlefront are honorable mentions as well. Hoping DICE doesnt mess up Battlefronts MP because I will pour months, if not years into that game if its half as enjoyable as the old school games.

Don’t hold your breath on DICE not screwing up the MP in Battlefront, RoBBins. It will be jacked for sure. The question is how long will it take for them to fix it? BF4 took nine months!

Yeah I was thinking of BF4 as I typed that, so I’m hoping they’ve learned a little bit from that game as to how not to screw the pooch MP wise. Only time will tell!

It should be assumed that every developer will ship every MP game critically broken. The big surprise is no longer that it’s broken but that it isn’t.
