PSA: Gamescom 2014

August 10, 2014
by

We are expecting to see some The Division gameplay running on the Xbox One. Game Informer provides the schedule with the following highlights: Microsoft’s show is on the 12th at 08:00 AM EST (05:00 AM PST), and EA’s show is on the 13th at 04:00 PM EST (01:00 PM PST). We can post comments, impressions, and game videos in this thread. (Embedded above is an old Division video featuring Tablet gameplay from last year’s Gamescon. I will swap it out for the new vid when it becomes available.)

Also, there should be a PvZ:GW update on Tuesday, which according to Game Informer, will include “new characters, customization options, maps, and game modes”. Neither Popcap nor EA has offered any info on anything more than the four PS4 appearance unlockables. It seems too good to be true, but just two more Gardens and Graveyards maps would give the game almost endless replayability.

EDIT: Extended gameplay of Remedy’s Quantum Break will be shown as well.  An unannounced XB1 game that uses MS’ Azure cloud computing may also be shown for the first time.

EDIT 2: Twitch is covering the entire event, and the official site for Gamescom is here.

Funny, we were just talking about Source 2 and L4D3 last night in party chat, and wouldn’t you know it but over at EvAv (just stopped by for a sec) ty posts a video summing up all current knowledge of the engine, including a brief demo of Hammer 2.

Apparently, Valve will have a booth at Gamescom, so we can expect that we might here/see something from them.

P.S. Kenny, thanks for fixing the title spelling error. I think I do that every year with that event!
P.S.S. Have a great start to the new school year! May all your students sit still and listen intently, all year!

No worries about the typo, and thank you for the kind thoughts about my new school year, Suns!

I’ve kind of changed regarding new games – Don’t really care anymore… Just tell me what game to buy, and when. I just enjoy the Stranded brotherhood, games are “background noise” to my muse.

Jimmy, understood. I should let you know then, that Grymm, Blank, and Zos are all picking up Diablo 3 (August 19th). In its genre, it stands towering above others and I’ve no doubt it is going to be awesome. I have trouble enjoying LOOT management, so I am probably not going to get it. However, that, followed by NHL15 (Sept 9) and Sunset Overdrive (Oct 28) is next on the majority’s list for MP gaming. After that, it is The Division, Evolve, and Rainbow Six Siege all in 2015-16.

As for games we already have, BF4 is getting a massive gameplay update/patch in September. It should be the patch that makes it play like it should have back when it was released. That doesn’t make the maps better, or take away the pain of 64 player gaming, but it does tighten everything else up. Also, PvZ:GW will continue to receive content drops, I am sure.

And you just gave us another tag line for the site, though I am not prepared yet to take down the “It’s my Snicker’s bar.”. 😀

You da Man, Grymmie! Well done! (great chatting with you while this thing is on!)

$399 Sunset Overdrive bundle (White XB1 console w/o Kinect), Zos! I’m eating my crow because I didn’t think MS would offer that kind of a deal. Goes to show us how far Phil Spencer is going to distance the new vision away from Mattrick’s FUBAR strategies.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is huge news to counter Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4 which is slated for Holiday ’15 on PS4. The reboot was one of my favorite games of 2013. Quantum Break looks very, very interesting. The use of time manipulation was well done from what was shown so far. Definitely has my focus now, but then again Remedy is pretty much the bee’s knees.

I was texting with Zos here & there throughout my first day with my students. We both agreed that Quantum Break’s animations looked a bit stiff and janky like many of Remedy’s previous games. They still have a good deal of time to address issues like this. If Remedy could get their animations up to the quality of Naughty Dog’s animations, I’ll be over the moon!

  8. August 12, 2014 12:43 pm

I’ll be picking up the white sunset overdrive console for Steph. Quantum Break looks gorgeous too!

Regarding Xbox OS, Snap Center is exactly what I wanted. Will solve my remaining problems with the UI navigation without kinect.

    Shots Fired:

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/08/12/day-z-coming-to-playstation-4

DayZ coming to PS4… that being said not mentioned as console exclusive. Which means, probably coming to XB1 down the road.

Given the broke ass state of the PC ‘stand alone’… this might be vaporware on the console.

I know Zos & Grymmie are gung ho about DayZ, but it’s a long ways away like Zos said. To say that the PC build is rough is an understatement.

  10. August 13, 2014 4:33 am

There was a great chat about CoD:AW earlier this evening. Zos made the point that it is a lot like Titanfall, only pretty, and therefore, it is more appealing. The SP stuff they showed in the Xbox Keynote was completely MEH for me, but this MP video looks very good. It is like Titanfall Pilots only, but with powers that the pilots in Titanfall didn’t have. If it is served up on dedicated servers, I suspect the 2GN will pick this up.

    • August 13, 2014 11:01 am

Hate to say it, but high chances of me buying this lol.

  11. August 13, 2014 4:35 am

Evolve. VERY sexy! Beta in January!

  12. August 13, 2014 7:37 am

“Rescue is a five-on-five, eSports-focused mode that gives each player one life during the round. With the destruction capable in Frostbite 3, it’s a shot across Rainbow Six Siege’s bow."GameInformer

    Pretty sneaky, Sis!

    • August 13, 2014 11:00 am

Their trailers look amazing, but their beta gameplay trailer VS the actual flow of mechanics was very different. I hope they release a MP demo or Beta for this so we can try for ourselves.

    • August 13, 2014 5:06 pm

      Yes, I completely agree.

  13. August 13, 2014 7:42 am

    And the final Titanfall DLC.

WOW! Really, they are so embarrassed about their graphics they are using CGI to promote this…at this point in its sales lifecycle! That is just sad.

      August 13, 2014 9:38 am

Portions of this CGI already existed throughout TitanFall’s media push. They just finally released it in full. Cool CGI though. I agree that it reeks of desperation when you don’t show actual gameplay, especially when “TitanCall” was just shown by Activision.

  14. August 13, 2014 10:17 pm

    “TitanCall” Nice!

Hey, you guys will like this!

    • August 13, 2014 11:18 pm

Great comparison! Hopefully the 1080p Xbox patch doesn’t bring the same performance issues. Also surprised by the similar performance to PC on highest settings, that game is regularly used for pc benchmarks.

Blizzard contacted Digital Foundry after their thorough analysis, and thanked them for pointing the bug out. They are currently patching the issue on the PS4. So, if it does occur on the XB1 version of the 1080p Day One patch, it should also be a non-issue. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-diablo-3-performance-analysis#comments

P.S. You guys should have been there last night as Grymmie, Zos, and me were watching the Twitch stream of a player that had early access to D3: UEE on XB1. It was lawls all the way! Bwahaha!!!

    • August 15, 2014 5:57 pm

Why was it lauls? Did he not know what he was doing?
