Wish List For Rod’s Gears Game

As per request by Zos, I am starting a new post for a list of things we would want in a new Gears game.

What the Original Gears got right and needs to be in the next game:

speed, shottie battles, difficult to use but rewarding to master long range weapons, smoke grenades, and Oh shit stealth, small symmetrical maps using the Gears 1 color palette, 4v4 Execution game mode, private parties with party chat lockout, speech “bubbles”, and “Valley of Death” cross-team chat.

What they fixed in sequels: Active reloads giving reload time cut but no extra power to the weapons, and no stopping power as in GoW: Judgement.  Also, no “X-factor”,or “Critical hit” damage modifiers.

Fix geometry so that movement is always smooth.  Optimize netcoding and offer selectable dedicated servers.

Horde mode for everyone but me.  Overrun for me and others who liked the mode.

Get rid of Beast mode and especially Team Death Match no matter how many people want it because it cannibalizes the Gears community for a mode that is very “un-Gears” like.  This should be one of those “executive game designer decisions”.

What am I missing?  Now, I wrote this up, Zos, you have to post it in the forum as per your promise.

You know, it is crazy that I should find myself smiling as I write this list.  Gears of War (original) pacing, teamwork, atmosphere, setting…there is still nothing like it in any game.  It was lightening in a bottle, but with Cliffy B’s ego out of the way, it might be possible to recapture it.  Black Tusk could pull it off just as well as 343 did with Halo 4.  Anything more or less than Gears 1.5 though, and I ain’t biting.

    Return of intimate battles – 4v4 on small/medium size maps. 5v5 is okay but don’t make larger maps for it.

    Less quantity of power weapons – Remove OneShot, mortars. I’m ok with Longshot sniper, Torquebow, Boomshot, hammer of dawn, and digger.

    Remove the melee attack – It’s shoot or chainsaw. That’s it.

    Remove “planting” AND “melee tagging” of grenades – To compromise, grenades CAN stick to an enemy on a direct hit from a throw.

    NO multiplayer achievements – Weapon/situation based achievements in multiplayer promote lone wolves, poor teamplay, and a negative experience for EVERYONE in general

    Make execution the flagship gametype – Give this mode most (if not all the love). The game is meant to be played with no respawns. Multiple/infinite lives removes the importance of each life and the game becomes a cycle of spawn, shoot, die, and repeat until the match ends.

    Final Killcam – I would like a replay of the final kill of each round. Keep it brief, but at least show a few seconds of the killer’s camera during the final kill of the round.

    Anti-host advantage measures – IF DEDICATED SERVERS ARE NOT POSSIBLE, then allow private matches to handicap the host’s damage output. No more almighty host lancers

    Emphasize in-game chat – Bring back the “death chat” where killed players from BOTH teams can talk about the game as they spectate.

    NO “one shot” weapons that will down an enemy instantly. (sniper headshots and explosive weapons are the exception).

    Less quantity of grenades – Everyone spawns with smoke while frag and ink grenades can be picked up. NO GRENADE TYPE WILL CAUSE A STUN, RAGDOLL, OR ANY LOSS OF CONTROL TO THE PLAYER

    Change chainsaw duels – The same people who can press B the fastest ALWAYS win. Create a rock, paper, scissors kind of dynamic or perhaps an active reload mechanic that awards the player with the best timing

    Bring back dark color tones – While giving each map a color theme (ex. Tyro station = orange)

    We should definitely organize and maybe even prioritize all of ours before posting over there. Making a uniform list that is clean and easy to read is important when trying to get our opinions read

    OK Guys, I think we can do this right. Let’s compose an Open Letter. Below is my rushed start. I have no time right now to take this further, but I want to compose two sections for this letter: first, what made Gears 1 so awesome, second, what we want in Gears:Black Tusk.

    An Open Letter Rod Fergusson and Black Tusk

    Dear Rod,

    We don’t expect you to remember us, but we have met you and gamed with you on several occasions, both in the Gears universe and in other virtual worlds. [picture of the Blankman talking with Rod] News of your leading a triple A team of developers in the creation of the next Gears of War game was a wonderful surprise. Most recently, we heard that you are open to questions, and are hoping that you are also open to reading the thoughts of some hardcore Gears gamers.

    Before we provide you with some of our thoughts about what should (and shouldn’t be) in a new Gears game, we thought we it would be helpful to share what we found magical about the original Gears game.

    A couple of paragraphs on what made Gears of War (original) lightning in a bottle – followed by a brief list of the major problems (melee, lag, X-factor/random crit hits, )

    Then, a concise presentation of our Wish List.

    Waste of time, guys. I’m just being honest even though it can be painful. Rod wants to get fans/gamers excited about the forthcoming Black Tusk Gears. The best way to do that is to generate excitement from the core audience. Don’t you think that Rod has been inundated with suggestions to improve the Gears games in the past? After all, he was there since Gears 1-3. Yet, no genuine improvement was made to recapture what made Gears 1 so special. The only bit of optimism that I have is that a completely new team & owner is heading up the franchise. Who knows, it can turn out to be a better Halo like 343 Industries created?

      You could be, and are likely, correct. It very well may be a waste of time but I don’t think it would take too much of a time commitment to get something put together. You never know what could happen under new management.

      Remember, I PM’d back and forth with a NHL dev about the perennial region coding and the very next year it was gone. Could be coincidence, but you never know who is willing to listen.

    I am really busy this week, so I don’t think I can help out much more until the weekend at the earliest. In response to Kenny’s comment, yes, it will most likely fall on deaf ears, but it is easy to do and then when the game comes out, in whatever condition, at least we can say we tried.

    Everyone here writes well, so go for it. Also, we can all Edit each others’ posts/comments so you can go from there.

    Hey, I just had a thought, we should each give a brief account of what made Gears 1 special to us – because it is different for us. I think it would also be enjoyable reading for sincere developers.

    redchief pretty much listed everything i could think of lol. I have a lot of faith in Rod to pull through with this game, especially after the atrocious game that Judgment was. I dont care if they give us a remastered, enhanced version of Gears 1 with better graphics. Bring back 4v4, get rid of the stupid newer weapons (except for the Breechshot), no more gigantic maps, keep the Gears 3 movement/fluidity/pace. I could go on for days about what I want in this new game. I’m just going to sit back and see what happens. Not going to get too hyped for it, but I do have faith that they’ll at least make a better game than Judgment.

    Also, whether it be a waste of time or not, I definitely think you guys should submit the list of ideas to Rod or whomever at Black Tusk Studios!

    Signed up over at the new official forums! Red do you still need help compiling this?

    Also, did you guys see the new COD trailer? Interesting that they decided to use the Xbox One for the rendering. I am assuming M$ payed for that.

    Kevin Spacey + Actual Next-Gen. Seriously, ever since COD4, the “alternative” COD titles are the better ones.

    Graphically looks quite good, especially considering it still has to “downscale” to ps3 and xbox 360.
