Wish List For Rod’s Gears Game
As per request by Zos, I am starting a new post for a list of things we would want in a new Gears game.
What the Original Gears got right and needs to be in the next game:
speed, shottie battles, difficult to use but rewarding to master long range weapons, smoke grenades, and Oh shit stealth, small symmetrical maps using the Gears 1 color palette, 4v4 Execution game mode, private parties with party chat lockout, speech “bubbles”, and “Valley of Death” cross-team chat.
What they fixed in sequels: Active reloads giving reload time cut but no extra power to the weapons, and no stopping power as in GoW: Judgement. Also, no “X-factor”,or “Critical hit” damage modifiers.
Fix geometry so that movement is always smooth. Optimize netcoding and offer selectable dedicated servers.
Horde mode for everyone but me. Overrun for me and others who liked the mode.
Get rid of Beast mode and especially Team Death Match no matter how many people want it because it cannibalizes the Gears community for a mode that is very “un-Gears” like. This should be one of those “executive game designer decisions”.

You know, it is crazy that I should find myself smiling as I write this list. Gears of War (original) pacing, teamwork, atmosphere, setting…there is still nothing like it in any game. It was lightening in a bottle, but with Cliffy B’s ego out of the way, it might be possible to recapture it. Black Tusk could pull it off just as well as 343 did with Halo 4. Anything more or less than Gears 1.5 though, and I ain’t biting.
