Shacknews 360 BF4 SP/MP Video Review

October 28, 2013

Some of you may have already seen this latest in the “Only in Battlefield” series.

I highlight this one in particular because of the water and how it affects gameplay. It is a game changer. Literally, the “environment” is constantly changing, in semi-unpredictable ways, and that is where the battle is fought. Very cool. As I mentioned in a post a while back, the water is so realistic that people with experience in boats will actually have an advantage (at least for a couple of hours of gaming anyway).

LevelCap craps all over the BF4 PC gaming netcode (note: he uses a multi-thousand dollar system). Very disappointing, and really surprising.

Kenai, what is your 360 BF4 experience?

I don’t know if it is the same for his console (PS4) experience or not. He seemed to absolutely love his time with the game on the PS4 (and regardless of resolution differences, I have zero doubt that the netcode for the Xbox One version will be at least as good as for the PS4).

    Hi Suns and guys,

Not too much to report on BF4 yet, as I just broke down and picked it up on Saturday evening.

Played about 1-1/2 hours of MP on Saturday night. Played through the first 2-1/2 acts of Campaign yesterday

What I can say for the 360 version is, that it is Better than BF3 due to

    1) Improved destruction – “cover” is now a relative word….
    2) Personally, I like the new control scheme on both infantry and vehicles
    3) Liking the new maps, but seem pretty empty (on some maps) with only 24 players….
    4) Looking forward to trying out the new “MP” – Training – let’s you practice different weapons / vehicles. Want to actually see if I can at least get decent at Heli’s….
    5) I’m liking the campaign so far. I don’t know why people complain about Dice’s version of SP. Linear and cinematic for the most part. They are all the “same” in that regard. COD, Halo, etc… This is what they are…
    6) Graphics (same as BF3), Lag, none noticeable. My Xbox did freeze once on Saturday night when trying to join a game.

    More later.

Wow! The changes to Metro look awesome, as do those for the other maps as well.

My XBox will freeze on certain maps, and my usual gaming partners have also noticed that Dawnbreaker in particular is a map to avoid. I have personally had an issue with Hainan Resort as well.

That said, all of the maps are a blast to play. Much better layout in all modes. Just watch out for Obliteration on Operation Locker. I have played two matches on that map, and both lasted for an hour plus. My match last night went on for 73 minutes. (116 resupplies with the small ammo packs. Pretty sure my squad was ready to kill me for that VO hell.)

I like the controls, except for one change: Vehicle Relative controls. Having driven vehicles for several hundred hours (see below) since Bad Company 2, I expect to move forward when I push up on the left stick, no matter what direction my turret is facing. The default controls make it so pressing up moves the vehicle in the direction you are facing if you can go that way. This is why I was crashing into obstacles. It is the only option I have turned off. I’m sure the new controls are more intuitive to newcomers, however. Interact button is no longer used to pick up kits, so no accidental kit-switching when meaning to arm M-COMs.

SP campaign is strikingly similar to BFBC2 campaign, but without the jokes.

I like the randomness of attachments due to most of them being obtained through battlepacks. Means there will be variety.

Overall, the map design and a number of small improvements make it a more entertaining experience than BF3 for me. I’ve expressed here before that I was disappointed by BF3. I only put 195 hours into it, after dropping 581 hours on Bad Company 2. I’ll try to list the small things going forward.

Herandar, thanks for the impressions. We would love to join you but are holding out until it is released on digital or we get a 360, whichever comes first.

      I can’t wait for the 360.

      I had to.

Yeah, yeah! Laugh it up, furball!

You know what I meant. 😉

I didn’t buy the game. My brother broke down, and we are sharing one copy. I’ll get it for a lower price later.

    Ok Now I’m Pissed!

    Buggy BF4!!!!

Mp keeps freezing. Once per night. Most times when I turn back on my console, my settings are all gone for BF4.

Many, many times after I play, and come back later, I’m at the previous level. “Progression” is just lost. I leave as a level 13, and come back as a 12…..

The kicker tonight is campaign. Last week I finished the first 3 acts, and part of 4. When I resumed the game tonight, it started at the opening credits. FAIL!!!!!!!

Not to mention that I finally decided to start playing tonight on normal, cause Hard is just bs. Takes 6 shots to take a guy down. Nothing different, just dice beefing up these guys with practically juggernaut suits.

Think I’m gonna bother to finish this marginal campaign now?….

Campaign = typical cod, but with levels / story that feels forced down your throat. Ok, now we do a level with tanks, ok , now with water vehicles, ok, now with …….

    Aghhh!!!,,, Lame.

Btw. BF4 with 24 people is like a barren wasteland on most maps. Don’t get me started on Flood map. That is unless you like swimming most of the game.

Parcel storm Rush is an utter fail. The first base is on a wrecked aircraft carrier. The defending team camps the main deck. The attacking team fails utterly, just trying to get out of the water. Never even made it to the islands.

Oh, and regarding Levolution?! The only vertical map is Seige of Shanghi.

The rest of the maps version of levolution, are buildings that crumble which are impossible to navigate through without getting stuck most of the time.

No wondering they are offering a $50 trade in to get the Xbox one version…. Not a bad offer, but still doesn’t ease my frustration tonight.

Why did you set yourself for frustration in the first place, Jimmy? The current-gen’s versions were gimped from the start.

Blankman, I bought it because I’m bored, and don’t have the budget for a launch Xbox One….

      Sorry to hear Jim! 😦

Hopefully it’s a better experience on next gen.

The thing is, you have to expect the playerbase on the XBone to be vastly smaller, especially at launch time. They may be able to have 64 player matches, but will they be able to fill many of them at launch??

  7. November 12, 2013 12:52 am

    LMAO@rED’s image!

Blank, my impression is that the next gen console versions are full of bugs, too, so it wasn’t just because it was the gimped edition.

Kenai, sorry to hear that. The beta mostly just prepared us for barren and ugly. It didn’t prepare us for crappy netcode and more bugs than Starship Troopers!

Actually, it isn’t too much of a surprise. I had a feeling that DICE was pulling an epic crunch. There is just no way they had enough time to get that sh!t out the door. Now, they have to try to catch up. Fortunately, their track record is that they follow through, at least to a certain extent (and much more than almost all other developers – has the patch for Payday come through yet? lol )

Regardless, it is horrible that you can’t enjoy the game you paid full price for.

Can’t wait to read the crew’s impressions of The One!! Just a little while longer! WOOT!

    • November 12, 2013 5:20 am

Oh Suns, another thing that is broken is the multiplayer brower. I can only join games through “quick match” or join on a friend.

I have little doubt that 6 months from now we’ll all be rolling together and loving the next gen version, but for now, it’s pretty painful.

With all I’ve said so far, I still can’t lose sight of the fact that this is still one of the best games

Battlefield 4 will be $25 in-store at WalMart if you go in to buy it after 6 PM on Thanksgiving… …in the United States. Lots of other games will also be on sale that night, including GTAV & AC4 at $35. I am looking at the Black Friday ad, not passing on hearsay.

Wonder how many people will buy at WalMart for $25, and then trade it in to GameStop for a $50 credit for XBone version.

      I would.

Canada just had a sale at Best Buy and Future shop, trade in ANY Xbox 360 or PS3 game and get your choice of COD:Ghosts, BF4, or AC4 on the same system (not next gen)

They were sold out so fast but what an awesome deal. I wanted to get all three and upgrade for 10$ to next gen.
I didn’t get any but still.
