Gearbox Lied to Sega, 2K About A:CM; Used funds for Borderlands

February 20, 2013

Pitchford BL2

According to an inside source from Gearbox, while working on Colonial Marines dating back to 2008, Pitchford and co. were using assets from Sega for the development of Aliens and putting it towards Borderlands budget. Each and every day I am losing more and more respect for that company. I haven’t seen such greasy tactics in gaming in awhile. Sure, Activision/EA are full of money hungry scumbags, but at least they never directly lie about their product, nevertheless taking funding from a Publisher and using it towards a project they’re not even a part of. That’s it for me with Pitchford and Gearbox. I’m not buying a single thing from them again.

And to add insult to injury for the folks over there, Pitchford is only responding to positive posts regarding Aliens at his personal Twitter, which consist of mostly fake accounts with only 1 or 2 tweets. Anything else would result in that person being blocked from his Twitter. Bitter much? Guess he can’t handle the heat from his own shitty sales tactics. And according to Pitchford, he says he’s “to lose a huge amount of money” due to Aliens flopping like it did. I doubt he invested any of his personal funds into the game, he could very well just be referring to the fat bonus check that he would receive that year.

Thanks for the heads-up on that news, Grymmie. On the day of the reviews, Kenny was talking about this, but it looks like now there are finally sources to confirm it.

My hope is that Sega gets full and appropriate compensation, and that all honest cogs-in-the-machine employees land on their feet when the dust clears.

Yes, I am completely with you on boycotting all products including DLC from Gearbox from now on. Their unscrupulous practices have been nothing but a disgrace for development studios. I hope that Sega brings as much legal action to bear against them. Any future partners or publishers that are considering working with Gearbox should follow the evidence that is slowly coming out very closely. Pitchford should lose his position as President of Gearbox for his deceptive practices. Gearbox is dead to me and I’ve been a firm supporter of them back to the Brother in Arms days. I may be one consumer, but a multitude of like minds will speak with our wallets. It’s ironic that this was due to a game/license that uttered “Game over, man. Game over.”
