Gow: Judgment – No Execution, Warzone, or Guardian

February 19, 2013

Had a very enjoyable time playing the original on both Saturday and Sunday last weekend.  Full rooms, lots of shenanigans.  Even came up with some new inside jokes, which I will leave for Grymm’s post with footage.  Allow me to just say this, Steph’s balls still clang loudly!

So, having managed to rescue most of the money I put towards A:CM, I thought I would take a closer look at Judgment, just in case People Can Fly decided to bring back private lobbies, team speak, and the “Valley of Death”.  As it turns out, Judgment doesn’t even support Execution or Warzone gametypes!

It is the final desecration of the corpse that was Gears of War.

Game. Over. Never did pull that trigger to pre-order Judgment. Something in my gut didn’t feel right. Now I know my instincts didn’t let me down. Epic fail. The true death of a beloved franchise. No doubt the campaign will be fun, but I’m not forking over full retail to play it when it can be had in a couple of months for a fraction of the costs.

BTW: The Epic forums are going crazy over this recent revelation. Epic has kept mum about DBNO & wouldn’t offer concrete details about the Warzone/Execution gametypes returning for the entire development of Judgment. They had no choice but to recently confirm that since the game just got leaked today & it’s torrenting everywhere. The info was bound to get out. A lot of fans/gamers have threatened to cancel their pre-orders. I suspect, many will follow through & they are not idle threats. Wow, the mass exodus of Epic & PCF personnel, Fortnite (the only other announced title), the shelving of The Samaritan, and now this! That’s too many nails in the coffin. Epic is pooched.

IMO, I thought the MP looks pretty good. Yes, they should still offer Execution & Warzone, but the “new” modes look pretty good. I will likely end up getting Judgement. Haven’t bought a new game in a while, so…

Jimmy, I understand where you are coming from, and especially after the great fun we had this past weekend, it is hard not to think it might be fun. But you have to remember – the lightening in that particular bottle is single-life, team-chat while alive and everyone-chat when dead, pitch-perfect pacing, limited weapons and tricks, shottie battles, and friendly-fire kills by over-zealous boomshot wielders, lightening.

As much as the idea of planting grenades, grabbing meat shields, and dying but not having to wait till the next round may sound appealing, Gears 2 and 3 proved to us that it only ruins the gameplay, not enhances it. It intensifies all the aspects about Gears that we don’t like, without giving us any of the things we do like.

Dropping down from above, throwing proximity mines, respawn Domination gametypes? They may sound and even look kinda cool, but in reality, they won’t be entertaining for more than a couple of hours, if that. After which, it will be screaming in agony as you mourn yet another missed chance to bring us Gears 1.5.

I am reminded of the line in Lost in America where Albert Brook’s wife tells him that her gambling away their entire nest egg in a Vegas casino is maybe a blessing in disguise. He tells her, in a way only he can, “No, its not. Its not a blessing in disguise. It’s not.”

These aren’t the scenes, but they give you a taste (remember, this is 1985).

Tons of the models, animations and texures are identical to GOW3. I watched the multiplayer vidoc on XBL (which didn’t mention the lack of primary gametypes LOL) and it just looked soo dissapointing. I might redbox it at somepoint, but this will be the first GOW game where the release date passes for me unnoticed. From the perspective of someone who was a “hardcore” fanboy of the series, it really speaks loudly how improperly handled this franchise was. I wish developers would spend more time on their games these days (and take risks).

Oh well… lets see what this new playstation looks like today. I am just hoping for some game footage (not CGI). Lots of cool stuff in the future, maybe some new IPs?

Sing it brutha! Amen! You guys know that I’m a diehard Gears fan. I hope that you realize that this game must be a clusterf%€k for me not to pick this up day one.

I think what you guys are talking about is the Beautiful Simplicity of Gears 1.

Yes, there were some things that needed to be corrected, but subsequent versions only fixed some of the problems (like not being able to blow up a downed person with either grenades or boom or torque). Host advantage / Dedicated servers is still open for debate

Where Epic failed in my opinion is similar to why I don’t really play COD anymore. Too many options / features / weapons. Too many things to keep track of. Meatshield?! Hated that “feature”

Less is sometimes More. And with Gears Judgement, it appears that they just keep piling on the crap. See through walls grenade sensors? Really?! Health giving grenades?

How many Gears Grenades are there now?! 8? 9? Come on!

Mid range sniper? That is semi automatic?!! What is this Black Ops?

That is why I love BF3 and L4D2. There are only a few options and all of them are necessary. Need a smoke loadout? Then you have to get rid of something. Want to set mines or repair vehicles (you can only choose one).

Sadly, Gears has become Spinal Tap…

“Yeah but this one goes to 11!”

I plan on buying this at launch solely for the campaign. If there’s anything Epic and People Can Fly will do right, its definitely the single player. However, I’ve said since the end of Gears 1 to previous Gearheads who have disappeared since then, that all I wanted added to the game was a Free For All mode. Nothing else. Instead, they shat on us with the retro lancer and sawed off (which now has 2 shots for those who didnt know, and looks just as powerful as the Gears 3 one. *que castration*) So needless to say Im pumped to try out that. Theres no doubt in my mind they will bring back Execution and Warzone (not sure about KoTH since Domination is pretty much the same thing), its just a matter of when. Seeing as how the retro and sawed off are only pick up weapons is a bit of a bright side, but then were let down immediately by the lack of maps. As of right now, I heard and seen that there are only 5 maps for TDM, Domination, and FFA. For Horde, theres only 4. The 5 maps for those 3 gametypes are ALL the same, no different ones included. For Horde though, I’m not sure if theyre 4 maps from TDM and such. Very, VERY disappointing. Only time will tell with this game.

Dont know if you guys have heard yet, but Epic and Maxim Magazine are releasing a launch day DLC (which is free as of now) that is bringing 2 new maps, Execution and DBNO back. Some good news for those buying the game.

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date, RoBBins! I don’t know who is making the decisions at Epic anymore, but they sure don’t know what they’re doing. The Gears franchise was already polarizing, now it’s even moreso due to their latest decisions. Many of these so-called design decisions seem haphazard & don’t even take community or fan requests into consideration.

As Blank said, thanks for the info, RoBBins.

You know, if Epic wants to go a couple steps further, and offer customizable gametypes (full weapon selection toggle switches) and private lobbies with the chat channels as in Gears 1, I would probably pre-order the game.

No, you wouldn’t. You’d wait until the bargain bin, Suns! 😉
