St. Artrek Into Darkness
The title of this post is not a typo. A fellow named Kirk, aka St. Artrek, travels into darkness to save his “family”. That is this story.
I really enjoyed the reboot movie, Star Trek (2009), so I was looking forward to the release of this trailer (via Aicn) and a sneak peek into what Paramount was brewing. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. Turn off the sound, and with the exception of the appearance of the Enterprise, the movie is indistinguishable from almost all other sci-fi space action movies. Could just as well be scenes from New Line Cinema’s 1998 Lost in Space. It looks thrilling, but has almost nothing to do with all of the things that make Star Trek unique.
What is it that makes Star Trek special? Off the top of my head:
- cerebral discussions on topics of religion, politics, philosophy, history, and the human condition
- missions that require teamwork to complete
- adventures happen in the middle of life, as a small part of a larger, longer journey
- sometimes campy dialogue and interesting technology
This trailer had none of that.
