Imagine Playing This With That

September 5, 2012

The Last of Us (via EvAv).

With Oculus Rift

Make no mistake.  Naughty Dog has not announced support for this device yet, but just imagine if they did.

PAR’s Ben Kuchera continues to report on the progress of the Oculus Rift and what caught my attention this time was the announcement that people with glasses need not worry.  Software will take care of vision challenges including astigmatism.  For those of you who don’t require glasses, this may not sound like a big deal.  For me, and my prescription isn’t even all that heavy, it is a boon, and has me thinking of all kinds of applications.  It is a bit of a leap, but by the time I actually get to visit y’all in person, I may look like this:

And at the flick of a switch, I may be able to toggle between the different spectra, depending on my needs.   ….LOL

    I was just thinking about this technology the other day. Wondering when someone was going to release a truly immersible VR system. It is just a matter of time, and all gamers will own a couple headsets.

    Thanks for the heads-up on that article, Kenai. It is because of glasses and the “hurl” factor that I wasn’t interested when Oculus first became public. My curiosity and faith is overriding those fears now.

    There is another issue, however. When you have both ears and eyes shut to the outside world, smell, taste, and touch are all that remain for communication and warning. The convenient thing is, you could just set up your xbox and chair in a closet and be happy (with the only unpleasantry being the wafting scent of your own sweaty balls). If this thing comes in at 200 bucks or less, and includes mic and earphones, I will be hard pressed to resist. They are talking anywhere between 100 and 1000 dollars (quality is their priority), so who knows what the price will be, but 200 bucks is the sweet spot for me.

    This thing is fucking nuts! Can’t believe how many people they’ve already got on-board for it.

    Suns, i LOL’d at work at the above comment “(with the only unpleasantry being the wafting scent of your own sweaty balls)”.
    People around me think I’m insane.

    Last of Us looks like an Uncharted mod. Too similar.

    @Average – We aim to please. 😉

    @’Frenik, I read that same sentiment over at EvAv. The fella hadn’t finished UC3 because it wasn’t his cup of tea, and he was dismissing this one because he thought it was too similar. The video above demonstrates nothing at all. But having seen gameplay from both, I can see how they are made by the same developer. However, from what little I have seen, aside from the movement, cover, and combat mechanics, these games are night and day, including the difference in voice acting quality. The genres are completely different – survival horror (scarcity of ammo etc) vs action. That alone, if there were nothing else, will make the game feel completely different.

      Hopefully it will, because aside from the climbing and puzzle solving I see a lot of Uncharted in Last of Us, which is great, it’s a great game. I just get turned off when I see the main character movements and model almost the same as Nathan Drake.

      but hey Ubisoft was able to turn their core game of splinter cell into Assassins Creed. So it may work out at the end.
