Undead Labs: Road Map To The Zombie MMO
A couple of years back, we covered the formation of Undead Labs studio and their ambition to create a console-centric, zombie MMO. The concept art was spectacular, and the idea that we might get an awesome zombie MMO coming to our platform of choice was exciting. Since that time, there has been a wave of games released and announced, in almost every genre (e.g., Plants VS Zombies and The Last of Us), utilizing zombies as the target for much violence. It wasn’t until the other day, however, that I realized I haven’t heard anything from Undead Labs for a very long time.
It turns out, they have been quite busy and have decided on a two-stage approach to bringing zombies to the masses. Class3 is going to be released on XBLA and will be a vehicle for game elements testing, the fan feedback of which will be heavily considered in the development of Class4, the subsequent MMO. It is a smart design and production decision if you ask me. The game is being created on CryENGINE3, which should mean pretty lighting and perhaps decent netcoding. For those who are interested in learning more, here, here, and here are great places to start.
At this point, I am just curious about any MMO project being designed for the console platform. Remember too, that Jeff Strain, founder of Undead Labs, was a lead programmer on Starcraft and Diablo, and was co-founder of WoW. He knows a few things. My gut tells me that with Microsoft as the publisher, they are hoping to have Class4 as a launch MMO exclusive for the 720.
