Unreal Engine 4 Demo

June 8, 2012

Hey Gang,

It appears EPIC released their UE4 tech demo video (in addition to those screens a few weeks back). The second vid in the article is even more impressive.

Can’t wait to see the tech on the next-gen consoles to see how it compares. Epic has definitely made their cash this generation on licensing their engine, so i would imagine that we will see similar looking games. Looking at Epic’s past engine unveils, the console generation was typically able to match (or surpass) the tech demo visual fidelity by the end of the consoles life. In many ways, GOW3 did that with the original UE3 demo (thanks to engine modifications). I believe that Epic is likely planning their engine for the consoles this time around more than ever.

Someone can pretty this post up, typing this from work LOL. DONE! 😉

      Ours is more interesting/fun lolol

UE4 is pretty sweet but I agree with Suns’ first point about the jump being a smaller difference as it was from xbox to 360

I know but the looong stretch of powered rails made me drool. That’s a lot of gold invested in that thing.

    Just a couple of observations.

    1. The difference between generations doesn’t feel as great as it did between past generations (quite ironic considering this is an 8 year gap as opposed to the 4 to 5 year gaps previous). I’ve no doubt it is substantial, but going from Gears 3 to the demos above doesn’t seem as spectacular as from Halo 2 to Gears 1.

    2. That fact may be the saving grace that keeps us from looking longingly at the PC versions from day 1. I still disagree 100% with you Zos. I think the console gamers are going to be crying disparity from launch day. Something that didn’t happen until BF3 in this gen.

    3. While the lighting and particle effects are cool, it is the gameplay affordances as demonstrated in Watch Dogs, that has me excited about the next gen.

    4. Is that demon King part of the Samaritan universe? Hmm….

I disagree. It shows very drastic improvements in lighting and textures. A lot of the games from this gen haven’t been able to create good lighting effects, heck you can still see pixelated shadows in almost every game. The same thing we thought when HD first came out, but then if you go back to SD gaming the changes are very drastic as well. Just like if you play BF3 without the HD textures.

For Kenny, from Potsie. Sometimes in a sweater is better. 😉

Fonzie said that the pool scene in Reindeer Games is still better than your Happy Days sweater. Instead of a thumbs up, he gave you a thumbs down. Ralph Malph agrees. LOL

lol. I have to agree with Suns, the subtle sweater salute is better.
