Penny Arcade Empire
Ben Kuchera is joining Jerry And Mike at Penny Arcade. This is huge news for those who enjoy the hobby of gaming beyond the actually playing of the games themselves. Ars Technica’s Opposable Thumbs will continue to be a daily stop for me, but I cannot wait to see what the Mad Scientists of PA have in store for us. I have featured Ben’s work here on several occasions as he is one of the few writers in the industry whom I would willing call a “Journalist”. His work involves research, technical and historical knowledge and experience, and is more often than not, entirely original in an ocean of retread and re-blogging. Good luck to him, Opposable Thumbs, and to Penny Arcade over the next months of transition. Can’t wait to see what they have in store for us!
UPDATE: For those interested, Ben is answering a ton of questions in a Q&A in the PA forums. It is full of interesting tidbits on games journalism, and his ideas for the site.
“We’re not interested in hitting every piece of news or even of operating like a traditional blog. I have no doubt that one person writing “news”-style content for PA is going to be enough for now. In a year or so, we’ll revisit the question. … We have a lot of ideas, but the main one is fewer, better stories. We want to tell the stories no one is telling in a way no one is doing. That’s not easy, and it’s going to take time to perfect our approach.“
