Forced Participation

July 22, 2011

I have several reasons for having recently spent a lot of time thinking about the ramifications of “services” like Facebook and Twitter. You all know my some of my past criticisms. Today, I came across an article in which the author defines one of the more ominous but increasingly unavoidable trends of these and similarly services: “forced participation”. More and more we are being asked to become a member of, or register with such and such, if we want access to the latest news or information.

It isn’t a stretch to think that someday, for the sake of convenience, our registration credentials will simply be displayed on our foreheads so that when the interface is activated and the camera scans our faces, we will be given instant access to all our favorite services. To quote the Iron Giant, “And all that that implies”.

We are frogs swimming in a pot of water that is slowly being brought to a boil.

I can’t remember which movie it was that used face scans by cameras to easily link a driver’s license everywhere you go. Don’t know if it was The Island or Minority Report.

but anyways forced participation is everywhere. It bothers me less that I need to log in for a blog or a news site using facebook, than having to get a State ID or a driver’s license to simply open a bank account.

or needing to have credit for almost everything.

The fact that simply being a paying costumer is no longer good enough, but that they need to have confirmation of your DOB, Full Name, etc.

I mean even for gaming. The fact that XBL and PSN need to have your information, and XBL in particular that you have to jump through various hurdles in order to simply remove a credit card, or having no credit card at all, is just frightening.

and now that I have a Smart TV, even my freaking TV needs to have some sort of ID registered somewhere if I want to buy and enjoy the latest apps.

Again for me Facebook is not PE #1. Pretty soon my fridge, my washer/dryer, they will all require some sort of my info. I don’t see it far fetched that one day we will have a smart toilet. Logging in every time you have to take a dump.

I think this will only continue should people allow it. And go PC people so we can play modded games we love indefinitely! More control! More freedom! PC bitches! I’m telling ya!

People and consumers are being dupped into this “forced participation” without conscious
by these slick social networks. Every time they register for a new account, they are providing these enterprises their vital personal information. They in turn, sell their databases to other companies. And we wonder why we’re being slammed with spam & unsolicited phone calls.
