If Only “Hikikomori” Were That Engaged

July 5, 2011

This video is presents an entertaining hybrid of the “Otaku” and “Hikikomori“.

The phenomenon of extreme social anxiety disorder as it is affecting millions of male youths in Japan is well documented and presented in Michael Zielenziger’s book, “Shutting Out The Sun“. The video is quite well done, my favorite part being the shot of the kitchen, but the reality of hikikomori, as opposed to otaku, is quite tragic.

Suns, Had a great weekend at the cottage. A couple families we’ve known since kids came up. Wonderful seeing the next generation of kids playing together. And we helped Jewel get over her fear of water. By the end of the weekend, she was swimming like a champ. I think it really is up to the parents to help get their kids outdoors and socializing. That became even clearer this weekend for me. This concept that you posted, has EVERYTHING to do with the Car Club dream that is buried deep inside.

p.s. We all went to the huge farmers market / flea market yesterday. Picked up bow and arrows for both boys. OMG… They are in Heaven.

Ken I agree 100% that it is the parents. But some parents would rather have other party’s do it for them.

Kenai, sounds like an awesome weekend! Seriously, I would give up FoDs for camping, swimming, and rafting any day. In a heart beat. May have to buy a tent this autumn (summer is simply too hot to camp).

Blankman and I were talking the other day about the tragedy that some of his students don’t even know how to play baseball.

Really, the last 35 years have been a perfect storm attacking childhood freedom, outdoor experience, and cross age-group socialization. Small families, over-protective parents, law-suits, fear mongering in the presses, genuine safety threats, urban living, stricter environmental laws preventing uninhibited camping etc. All on their own are no problem. Together, however, and gone is socializing and play and experience outside.

For us it was the hassle of going out. Even in PR living 5 minutes away from the beach, we only went there like 6 times in 4 years. Now that we have a pool in the complex it is much easier to just go out and be outdoors, and not have to think about packing/unpacking, parking, etc.

This past 4th of July was so different from past holidays, being able to go downtown without driving and walking around in a pedestrian friendly city is so much different from PR. We did so many activities in a day, I just couldn’t believe it from the music festival at the waterfront on the morning/noon to spending time at the pool in the evening and then going to a nearby park to watch the fireworks. Simply awesome.

I took this video today of the upper tram station:
